I like them but they have the same problem as a base model v6 mustang or a chevy colorado(in terms of coolness), its just a mini "girly" corvette, its not the top dog, its too compromised.
And while it may be quick i'd NEVER buy anything GM from that period of time, i'm only just now starting to have faith in them again.

My neighbor wanted an FRS but couldnt afford it, so he bought one of these for like $13k. I drove it, it was surprisingly fun, to be shamefully honest. I voted cool.
I'd still never drive one but thats just my personal preference lol |

Voted cool, kinda have to since it was on my short list when I first started looking at the FR-S.
I liked the angles on the Sky Redline, wouldn't have bought the Solstice. I might still buy one at some point if the used prices hit a good spot. I'd buy one of these over the MR-2 Spyder because I think its a better looking car.

The Saturn Sky and the Pontiac Solstice look AMAZING.
The problem is that they are GM products. I was given a '92 Saturn in 2006 and I couldn't buy parts for it to save my life. It was SO frustrating to be on the phone with a big Saturn dealership and be told "you might try a wreaking yard". |

I have been on a somewhat long-term project at USAA's Corporate Office in San Antonio and whenever it's a nice day outside, I see a TON of these things in the employee parking garages. And almost all of them are driven by older, somewhat overweight, mostly balding, mid-50 year old men - and they all drive them like grandpa's... I've never seen one pushed or driven like a "sports car"... it makes me wonder how capable they really are? Even as a die-hard Miata owner, I think the Redline versions of the Sky are kinda cool cars, but because of the owner's of those cars (at least the ones I see), I could never see myself driving one... This is kinda a tough call for me, but in my book, it's just not "cool".

Poorly marketed and executed, but a cool program that could have been very good had it received the attention it needed. And a transmission that didn't suck.

That's odd. I've owned lots of GM products, sometimes ones that were decades old, and I've never had an issue getting a part, particularly for a mainstream model. I could see where a body part for one of these might be difficult to get, but that's true for any company's more niche products.

2JZ Saturn Sky/Pontiac Solstice/Opel GT
Have any of you guys heard about this yet? Apparently, a 2JZ will bolt right up to the factory motor mounts and stock Aisin transmission in the Saturn Sky Red Line, making it one of the easiest big power engine swaps around.
Not only that, but that car is quite wide and comes with double wishbones from the factory... leaving the possibility of quite high levels of performance on the table. Possibly the best kept secret in drifting? Supposedly the chassis was developed as a front engine Elise...
The reason the transmission bolts up is that it's a derivative of the Aisin R154 transmission used in the Turbo MKIII Supra (more syncros so it's smoother and has a different spline count and shifter setup) Engine mount points, no idea... Also, the Ecotec motors are powerhouses, so there's really no need to go 2JZ... |
