I fell in love with the soul that Subaru engines have (the noise, the weird design, etc.), and initially tried to buy a wrx. After months of searching and only finding examples that were absolutely beat to shit I decided to look at newer cars. Test drove one and loved it. Nimble feel, peppy engine that's happy to rev, and outstanding looks.

I test drove 17 different cars, with a budget of max $60k to buy. Of all the cars I test drove, the BRZ was one of the cheapest, and it also happened to be one of the best handling. It also hands down had the best factory seats of any of the cars I test drove, and had good visibility. I really wanted to get a Camaro SS 1LE, but the visibility in the Camaro is absolute garbage, like driving a tank. Then the Miata RF topped my list, but honestly the BRZ handles better stock, looks better, and it's a coupe rather than a convertible and I don't really like convertibles.
I went to the Subaru dealership with the intent of ordering another STI w/ SPT workup, but the BRZ really surprised me. Given what I paid for it, it has the added bonus that if I throw it into a wall on the track that I will be sad but not destroyed afterwards. The only car I test drove that came close to make me regret my decision was the Alfa Romeo 4C. That is one amazing piece of machinery and low mileage CPO examples can be had for $45k. |

I was personally looking for a car that felt very direct and made me feel one with the car. Also was looking to go Japanese since my previous car was a VW MK7 GOLF R. Car is good but it felt numb and German over-engineering insured that I was pulling my hair out every time I worked on it or modded it.
Power was not an issue as I love to rev out my cars and downshift for power. I rarely utilized the full power of the Golf R and when I did, the fun didn't last long because I was over the speed limit in no time. I also closely looked at the Honda S2000 and ND Miata. Living in Washington State, Honda S2000 was not ideal due to mostly rainy weather and poor visibility with top up. ND Miata, although super fun, was a little too tight for me. This was going to be my year round DD. I test drove a lot of cars including the S2000, ND and NB Miata, 350Z, WRX, STI, GTI, BRZ, E46 M3, etc. The BRZ was the closest car that met my criteria as well as having back seats and decent trunk space. I have to transport my little brother in addition to my wife sometimes so the back seats were nice. We tried it out and it worked because we are short asians lol. Trunk space with rear seats down is nice because I play in a band at church and I was able to fit my guitar, a full length keyboard and all my gear. Car isn't arriving until July but I can't wait! |

Considered an ap2 s2000, nc Miata, 987 Cayman S, 370z and mustang GT.
Ended up with the FR-S bc I wanted something trackable that wouldn't need a roll bar installed. That eliminated the convertibles. The Mustang GT was bigger and heavier than I wanted. Didn't really like the 370z - felt like a tweener to me. Too underpowered to compete with the pony cars, too heavy compared with the s2000/FRS/Miata. The car that came closest to what I wanted was the Cayman S, but I thought the FR-S was a better value being new and was a little more tossable. 7 years and 30+ track days later, no regrets. I've even started to use those useless rear seats to drive my kid around from time to time.

At the time, the turbos blew on my 335i. I was sick of blowing money on it. I wanted something sporty, good looking, and above all reliable. I considered G35, 370Z, Genesis Coupe and every other RWD coupe and eventually ended up with a BRZ. It was honestly my attainable dream car and the only car I was willing to spend $15,000+ on. It was a CPO in the color and transmission I wanted for a decent price so it was a no-brainer for me.
Funny story about the reliability part. The day after I bought it, I was driving home from work and the check engine light comes on. Keep in mind I'm coming from a nightmare money pit that was the BMW. I go off on the salesman and all that on the phone asking why they called this CPO etc lmao. When I got home, I checked the gas cap just in case and it was slightly opened from when they filled it up lol I really couldn't be happier with my purchase. Can't wait to make it my own with a couple simple mods. I've had zero issues with it and overall, I'd recommend this car to anyone looking for a light, RWD car that handles well. |

I had always been interested in the 86 twins since I first sat in one at a Subaru dealership in 2012. But as a high school senior then, it would be a long time before I could afford to have one. Fast forward to late 2017, I'm at a better paying job and could finally justify spending some more money on a newer car after racing and dailying Miatas for so many years.
The FR-S finally made sense to buy used as it's gone through a good amount of its depreciation curve already. I bought my '13 salvaged with mainly cosmetic issues. It's a car that for me has a lot of potential to hang with more expensive cars with a good driver behind the wheel. It also has plenty of room inside for a bigger guy like me to be comfortable. The seats are the best of any car I've owned. The steering is telepathic. The stock suspension is surprisingly usable for an inexpensive Japanese car. $1200 for an OFT, header, and tune later and the car is everything I ever wanted out of a sports car.
