"Came into the office this morning and there was a great surprise delivery from Japan waiting in our warehouse… Matte Black RP03 Racing Series wheels! For now, the black version of the RP03 will be available in a 17×8 5×100 +48 configuration for the Subaru crowd along with a 19×8.5 +22, and 19×10 +22 setup for all of the 5×114.3 cars. 17x8 RP03 are 17.9lbs. Full RP03 weight and size chart.

And the 17x8.5 (the size mentioned above) is 19. Is the extra 1/2" 2 whole lbs? Or is it because the 17x8.5 on the weight chart is a low 30s offset as opposed to these new wheels high 40s? Maybe they're 18lbs. *shrug* I'm not sure because the manufacturer doesn't care enough to post the weight of the wheels with the announcement. Hell, maybe the new coating is heavier and we're looking at 20lbs for the wheel.

I'm just disappointed that wheel manufacturers trying to sell to a performance market don't seem to think weight is important.

Maybe I missed it but where is a 8.5 wide wheel mentioned in any of these posts? All 5x100 related references are to a 17x8 only...

As for why a 17x8.5 (which are a 5x114.3 PCD) is 1.2lbs heavier, I'm sure that is because of the added material.

I had the RPF1s in black on my Miata...I personally weighed them on a extremely accurate scale at 9.5lbs each (15x7)...Enkei lists that wheel with silver paint at 9.85lbs..., in theory the black RP03 will be lighter than the silver version, but we won't know for sure until they deliver a set and someone throws them on a scale.

MOST shoppers are more concerned with looks than weights. Enkei doesn't hide their Racing Wheel weights...pretty much any of them are available on their site. If you are looking for the lightest option look at the RPF1. I'll probably end up with NT03+Ms (transferring the 17x8s from my tC) or new PF01s in the smallest, widest option (which is looking like a 17x8 at 18.2lbs).

Ahh, misread the 17x8 5x100 as 17x8.5.

It just irks me. I think the weight of a wheel should be just as available as the sizes. Some manufactures seem to do their best not to post weight. You're right that a lot of people don't care. But for a racing wheel, it should matter. I'm really surprised Volk didn't announce weights with their new sizes too.

I wish I liked the RPF1 look more, and that the NT03 looked better in higher offsets. I was going to go moderate on my tire and rim choice to keep the weight at or under the stock weight. But a chat over at Vorshlag has be thinking of taking the hit in weight and going wide..

While they're at it, it might be nice to mention the moment of inertia (or rather the constant before the MR^2, aka center of mass distribution), so people can figure out which wheel is "the fastest".

Drinking the Fair Kool-Aid? What are you planning on doing with the car? AutoX? Maxing out the ST* tire rule at 255/265? Granted I don't have quite the expertise that Terry does, but I do think going that wide will be overkill--remember that the law of diminishing returns applies to wheel/tire widths too, and you will only have 150ft/lbs/200hp+/-15 and a 2500ish lb car to turn the big heavy wheels with.

I run 225s on the tC for street and track and while going to a 245 is doable, it's not worth it to me, and the FR-S is going to be about 600lbs lighter than the tC. On our race cars (Integras and E30s) we choose to run a 205/50-15 and not a wider tire because the added width doesn't really buy us any cornering speed (and scrubs some straightline speed).

Heh, there certainly is some kool-aid on offer, but you'll find that with anyone who's passionate about what they do. I even have my own brand on IWSTI.com. But I drink sparingly and like to mix the flavors.

One thing I learned from that forum is how they weight certain modifications. Granted, they seem to lean heavily towards AutoX, so that will factor in. But they choose tire width over weight, and right height over geometry. Learning about their philosophies, and yours, helps me choose how I want my cars to behave.

Except for my dedicated racer (which doesn't really translate onto tarmac) I mod for street performance. I know that's probably a nails-on-chalkboard statement for you and Fair!. But I think th ere's a lot of interesting aspects to it.

Having no established baseline for this car makes this mental exercise really fun for me, so my plans for tires alone have changed a lot since I started. Initially I was thinking 225s. But I might be leaning towards something a bit more beefier now. But not the 265s STX would allow. It's all about moderation and figuring out where to draw the line.

I still have a couple more months to change my mind a few times more.
