Scion FR-S to random people that ask about it. When I'm talking to my wife or friends, I just say the Toyota or 86.

Example: "let's take the Toyota/86 tonight"

So I don't care if people are confused. I prefer to call it a Toyota GT86 even if they don't know what it is. And yes, I have all the correct badges to justify it.
You still have a Subaru. Exhibit A, I guess, of SIS (Scion Insecurity Syndrome) in a bad way.

If you didn't buy an 86 overseas, you own a Scion. There's no two ways about it. Calling it anything else is just lying or being a poser (and about something really stupid to boot). Taking a one-off suit with a different label and sewing an Yves St. Laurent tag on it doesn't make it authentic, even if it did come from the same factory and is the same material.

Subaru? Ok, well anyway... I don't care about the Scion Inferiority Syndrome. Toyota GT86 is what the car is everywhere else in the world. We call it an FT86/86/GT86 when we discuss it any other time and I just carry that simplicity over. The 86 branding on the car makes that an easy fix. If you are a car guy, you know what I and others mean when we say we drive a GT86. Everyone else who aren't car people aren't gonna bother to care or look it up. And if they did they would still get pics of the same car I'm driving.

In other markets there are different spec models.

In NZ the base model is the '86' - which is the FRS, and then there's the GT86 with 17" wheels, HID lights, Climate control etc.

I think the UK only get the GT86 and Aussy get both, but call the GT86 an 86GTS.

When people ask I say it's a Scion FR-S. 95% of them have the same question, "what's a scion!". A Toyota made brand....ohhhh Toyota, nice car!

When someone asks me this they better be prepared for a history lesson. I simply start by saying "It depends where you buy it." If they follow up with what do you mean, I unleash the whole history of the car. Otherwise I just "A Scion".

We call it the 86 to refer to the car, however just to complicate matters, the base model is 86 GT, not just 86. Upper spec as you've said, 86 GTS. I think in Japan the top spec is the 86 GT Limited. Good job Toyota marketing.

I call mine a 86. Because it is an 86. People ask me what it is and I tell them its an 86. They still have no idea what I'm on about.
If I had a FR-S, I'd call it that
If I had a BRZ, I'd call it that

Not to mention that on the Australian cars there is nothing to say what kind of car it is.
All there is on the back is a Toyota logo, TOYOTA written out. The only indication its an 86 is the emblem on the sides, which to be honest still doesn't explain it.

Do you people who call your fr-s a 86 tell the parts department person at autozone/pep boys that its a toyota 86?

If you do, why are you wasting the persons time?

I call it a Scion FR-S. the fact that it's a Scion doesn't bother me. People who know about it already know about the branding and the GT86 story, and for those that don't know, I don't bother expanding on it any further because just like the saying goes "if I have to explain it, you wouldn't understand anyway"

What's on your registration? Then that's what you have. Pretty simple.
