It is fun, but I found it was a slippery slope of buying lots of tools and materials... Wanna come up to Canada and buy a bunch of my stuff that is collecting dust at my parents place?

I've never made a knife or other metal stuff, so wanted to try it out. Maybe some simple ones like ring or knife. I'm not planning to forge or anything... it'll be cool and all, but don't need. From the look of it, saw, sandpaper and file should be good beginner tools to have. Of course heat treating and so on need to be done, but looks like some shop can do it for me for fair price. |

For heat-treating in the USA, bladeforums swore by Peters' heat treating https://www.petersheattreat.com/blades/ For an excellent wet-dry sandpaper, I would recommend the Rhynowet Redline aluminum oxide series. http://www.supergrit.com/products/RedlineRedFlexSheets I still use that sandpaper for the hobby woodworking I do and it lasts way longer than anything else I have tried. |

Thanks for the sandpaper info. I was wondering bout what kind of sandpaper to use, cuz I'm pretty sure it's not like I can use any sandpaper. |

I managed to dig up a photo of one I made in 2011... this was done with hand tools. Pretty sure it was 3/16" thick O-1 with black canvas micarta handles. Logo was done with an etch-o-matic and a custom stencil for my last name. All this stuff must be in boxes somewhere... |

Driver rear. Stock tire. 65mph Was 100% not a low pressure issue as I check minimal once a month and they were all at proper psi, maybe had to add air once or twice a year at most. Literally had last checked psi right before driving it. |

Yup! It was really bad for a while, especially in my neighborhood due to no winds but I'm pretty sure I won't die of lung ailments anytime soon! I'm a rebel... Oh how I miss this place. |

I believe this one was 14" long. It was one of the first ones I made, so while it looks pretty good I can't say it was very functional. 3/16" is way too thick and removing the bevel material with a file is what took the most time. I was trying to make a large "chopping" knife for back country hiking to replace carrying a small axe (batoning duty mostly). The handle design was not safe for swinging around something that heavy, and the polished handle scales made it quite slippery. Start small. Try 1/8" or 3/32" thick steel... especially if you are tackling it with hand files! G-10 is fairly easy to work with and the textured stuff is nice and grippy. Remember to wear a mask when you sand that stuff, it is very bad for your nose, throat and lungs. |

Yeah, I heard G-10 is made out of fiberglass, (or something like that) so require to wear a mask. Quick question, do you recommend any proxi? I'm assuming don't need any special proxi to glue em to the steel. |
