SOLVED: New 2018 brz ticking noise with accelerating after valve job

Hello

I recently had check light engine codes p119f and p219a which lead to my 2018 brz with 2000 miles needing the engine removed and valves adjusted.

I now hear a ticking noise that corresponds to the rpms and acceleration outside the window as i drive (most prominent around 1500-4000k and when I am driving next to a wall or barrier on driver or passenger side).

Wondering if anyone else has the same noise, therefore being normal? I'm hoping it's just the direct injectors as it sounds similar to the ticking noise during cold start up.

Sound starts around 4 seconds into video. Sounds like a sewing machine or typewriter

SOLVED: dealer replaced exhaust manifold gaskets. No more ticking or exhaust smell.

Ticking noise during cold start up? I know I have a 14, but I'm not familiar with this noise.

RPM dependent ticking does not sound like injector noise either. Do you have a high quality video you could post?

I tried filming the sound but all I got was road noise. I will try again later.

Dealer tech said it was direct injection noise, but he also said my original reason for the check engine light was because I did not put in Chevron gas (so I do not really trust what he says completely).

Listening to exhaust videos on YouTube I can hear a ticking sound on cold startups that go away once the high idle mode turns down

First off, the person that told you to use only Chevron gas is confused or you misunderstood him/her. Chevron gas is good but any top tier gasoline will work, as long as it's high octane.

I don't hear anything in your video, except a FA-20 engine running -

I'd suggest you make sure the gas you are using is high octane and the crankcase oil is 0-w20 weight and it's up to the full level.

Then, I'd suggest you run it for a few hundred miles and see if it settles down. You may wish to compare the sound the engine is making to another BRZ on the dealers lot.

Thank you for the reply and welcome.

The noise is only audible if you turn up the volume as there is a lot of road noise and I filmed it with my phone. Sounds like a sewing machine around 4 seconds in.

The Chevron gas was actually regarding my check engine light with the two codes I had. The tech told me they were probably caused by not using best quality gas, yet it came back on again after I filled up w Chevron. However I actually needed a valve job as I looked up the codes myself and found a TSB. Hence why I don't know to really trust what he may be telling me now regarding the possible direct injection noise.

Hopefully it is just normal like you said, as the car runs well

I hear it in your video, doesn't sound normal, but quality isn't good enough to judge.

Though it logically follows: If the sound wasn't there before, and it's there after someone dismantled part of the engine, it's not normal.

go back to the dealer that did it, it's their responsibility.

I hear it...like a flutter sound as you accelerate but sounds like it could be normal (these engines make a lot of weird sounds!) Have the service tech ride with you and see what they think, especially since the noise is new after they worked in it.

Man I'm just not hearing anything but road noise. Maybe get another recording with the windows up?

Not sure if noise was there before the valve job, as I just bought it around 7 months ago and I usually had my windows up with AC on (can't hear the noise in the cabin).

Dealer tech said noise was normal due to direct injection (as stated in a previous post, I'm not sure if I trust him much, though)

I'm wondering if I'm just being overly sensitive to any noise now since I'm spooked that my new car already has had major engine work

Does anybody else hears something like a sewing machine when accelerating next to a barrier with driver window down?

I hear all sorts of weird noises when in a drive through or such. Never really have become used to all of them. I don't really hear anything abnormal in the video but it is really hard to tell what is happening. A guy that tells you that a CEL was because you didn't use a certain brand of gas does lose credibility but he may be right this time. You may be a bit sensitive to the noise but eventually it will be the norm and won't bother you as much. Then you can worry if it stops making it all of a sudden.

Not really hearing anything to be honest. I also used earbuds.

The tech specifying ONLY Chevron gas seems suspect as well. As long as you're meeting the octane requirements and getting good quality gas you shouldn't have issues.

Unless its crickets or the steady injector noise you're hearing. The injector noise to me has never been noticeably RPM dependent, though.

Were any exhaust/header parts removed? Check the gaskets there might be a small leak. The header bolts should be checked if the header was removed. Might need to be retorqued or leaking from gaskets.

Since the engine had to come out, I assume either the header was removed from the engine, or the header was left on and disconnected where it meets the overpipe (not sure which is usually done)?

I too am wondering if i have a leak, as i think I can smell a small amount of exhaust in the cabin when using the fan not set on recirculate. Will have it checked out in a week or so on a lift.
