Very easy, actually. It's just three bolts, pop the plate off (it'll be "stuck" to the back thanks to the sealant), clean plate off, re-sealant, replace.

I checked the are today and I couldn't find any traces of oil. I am still not convinced it isn't leaking a tiny amount, it only takes a drop of oil to get an oil burning smell.

The plate is very accessible. I wouldn't try sealing anything from the outside, just do what AVO said, take if off and reseal it and put it back.

Will oil spill out when the plate is removed?

I wouldn't imagine it would unless you were making oil pressure at the time. I mean, maybe a tad...

I would be very cautious about the sealant used and contaminating the oil. I'm not sure whats considered automotive grade in that regard..

Jeez you guys! Everytime someone post's a new problem I run to my car and check.

My VIN is 11XX a pretty early car. No leak! I must say that I have none, that is zero issues with my car. No taillamp leaks, crickets, GPS issues, creaks/rattles, etc.

My car is now at 7100 miles. So perhaps I'm in the clear.

Don't jinx yourself just yet. My car didn't start getting the smell till I hit around 14,500 miles and I finally got condensation in a taillight two days ago after buying my car last June. Chirping sound did just go away sometime this week (after starting at 1,000-2,000 miles).

Those are some equivalent sealants if you don't want to go to the dealer and get the Subaru Three Bond stuff.

Probably the best stuff to use is the Permatex Anaerobic sealant, but it's expensive as well.

If you wait awhile after shutting the car off you shouldn't really get any oil coming out of there except maybe a really small amount of residual oil, I wouldn't worry about it.

It does seem to look like that plate is the source of the drip.

Has anyone with an automatic actually experienced the oil smell?

Like I posted about 2 weeks ago. I saw smoke from the passenger side of the car. After I parked I opened the hood and smelled plastic burning type of smell. It was faint, but I did smell it. Haven't seen or smelled it since.

I'm at 3400 and have this problem too. After the car warms up there are faint wisps of smoke and a burning smell coming from the passenger side engine area. I had assumed it was because the car sits 2~3 weeks in-between warm ups. Attempting the plate trick will be on my list of things to do.

During my turbo kit install, I noticed some oil at the bottom of that plate. Since I did my oil pan, I purchased some Fuji Bond. I may pull that plate and try sealing it up better with the Fuji Bond. I was thinking it might have been leaking because the car was up on jackstands and had been refilled with oil without running the engine and perhaps the oil was allowed to pool in that area where it normally wouldn't be.

This is a little unrelated but I did notice some oil gets caught under the metal panel when doing oil changes. The first time I took the car around for a spin after doing a oil change I did notice some oil smell.
