"Puff" of air when blipping throttle
Hey all! JUst got my 2013 BRZ a few days ago. She runs great. Had it checked over by my mechanic and he found nothing glaring. He drove it too and it all checked out.
I've been noticing that when I blip the throttle on downshifts or when I blip it in idle, there seems to be this puff of air noise that occurs a split second before the RPMs rev up. It's almost like a very quick and slight hesitation or something. Hard to describe it without actually being able to hear it in person unfortunately. It's worth mentioning that the previous owner had a complete header back exhaust with a tune before I bought the car. When I bought the car he put a new stock header back system back on and flashed the ECU back to stock (he was running a tune with his aftermarket set up). Also, the car still has the Perrin inlet hose on it right now The car runs great, no loss of horsepower, It feels every bit as fast, if not faster than my buddies' totally stock 13' BRZ. Is this a cause for concern? Could the car be running lean? Really not sure what to do. Thanks! |

In my previous car I first recognized that sound when I installed an exhaust, it became louder when I added an intake. It's just air rushing thru intake and exhaust at sudden throttle changes.
For you its probably just the inlet hose amplifying some induction noise and you being very sensitive to all sorts of noises with the new car. This car has multiple different sources of noise that worry some people initially, but functionally they cause no issues (transmission clunks, fuel pump chirp etc.) |

Normal. That's the throttle butterfly opening. Imagine covering the hose on a shop vacuum then lifting your palm off of it. Same sucking sound.

Thanks guys. I remember a few months back when I bought my Tacoma I was sensitive to every noise and vibration but it turns out it was all just normal.
I guess this is much the same. The previous owner told me I do not need a tune with just an inlet hose because it keeps the MAF sensor in the same place. Is this true? I have been trying to find any threads about it online for a few days now with no luck. Thanks again for your help |

I see where you got your concern resolved. I suggest, when driving this car, you just de-tune your ears a bit. The car will usually show you a picture, if it's not happy ...... humfrz |

Heh, then you're fine! It seems to be more pronounced with an aftermarket filter or intake system.

Thanks guys. I'm hyper sensitive to every noise because it's new. I am hearing a very audible ticking noise as well now. Sometimes it's chirpy and sometimes it ticks.
I guess these are all normal FA20 noises! |

Yep they are noisy little buggers and I enjoy the racket since it helps bring the car to life.
