The OTT (Other Than Twin)

I recently replaced my 2002 NB miata with a 2016 BRZ. On the miata forum, there was the concept of the OTM (Other Than Miata).

This was a vehicle that served to compliment your miata. It provided some capability that your miata did not have. Or it was there to serve as a more mundane driving vehicle for daily duty.

My OTM was my 2003 VW Jetta TDI. This is a great car for daily duty. It has a soft, compliant suspension. The diesel engine has some punchy, responsive torque. It gets fantastic mpg (easily over 50) during low speed, low load surface street driving (45-55 mph). MPG drops into the mid 40s if you get on the highway and start going 70+mph. Range on a single tank can stretch beyond 700 miles.

It's an unorthodox, quirky vehicle that is fun to drive. It's one of the last overt diesel cars that were produced. It's unashamed of its dieselness. It proudly clatters away.

While there is decent torque available and you can get an adequate short burst of acceleration, the engine produces only 90hp, and it has to motivate close to 3000 lbs of vehicle. It is dreadfully slow from 0-60. It made my NB seem like a fast car, and my BRZ even more so.

My Jetta now soldiers on as the OTT, while the BRZ sits pretty in the garage waiting for a stretch of nice weather or a canyon road trip.

Post up your OTT.
