On the right track, the twin can still get it done with super driving. The Dixie Champ Tour results from two weeks ago proved that.

the Twins are still competitive in DS, you just need 2 inches of standing water to make it happen!

I am doing DS this year.
Non SSC Konis Three season old RE71Rs I was going to replace the tires but with my region only having 2 events for the year I figured no reason to get new ones. There are other clubs around but I am not sure about ovals. |

I wouldn't read too much into one event. They are very clearly not up to the task.

So I just autocross for fun and don't care about competitiveness, but I just noticed that the civic type r and focus rs are in DS this year. Are the twins competitive with these cars with similar skill drivers? It seems like the twins are out matched here in thier mostly stock form.

Driver skill is key, yesterday we did a little practice session and the civic type r drivers isnt slow. they wwhere running 70 seconds around the course ( comparitively most of STX guys where pushing 72)
that said we had one STX guy with a fully prepped car on 245 RE71R's run a 68 so... its all dependant. the focus RS and civic type r are monstrous cars but they also have their own weakness's. Id focus on what you can do. I have a sneaking feeling both those cars would be bumped up a class later on, they are over 250 hp to the wheels and among the heavier cars in the class anyways |

The FR-S/BRZ/86 is no longer competitive in any "Street" class, and it has been that way for a couple years now. With very specific conditions and a lot of luck, it can still trophy/win, but it will never be the favorite in either class. With that said, it is still a fun RWD car in CS/DS trim that will probably be as fun/more fun than any of the FWD/AWD options in DS and can haul more things comfortably than a CS Miata.
I still have my car set up for "Street" class, but I've moved into other cars at big events when I want to be competitive. Unless the rules change again to favor our cars in "Street," STX and SSC are the places where our cars are on the most level playing field. |

Wahoo! Won DS yesterday in Cincy SCCA's fun event.
What you don't see is the STI, Golf R, and Velocitor N that were almost 2 seconds faster but running in index classes...

The twin is definitely not the favorite car to have in DS, but you can see results at Charlotte and Mineral Wells Champ Tour (twin was 0.1 off the reigning DS national champ in a Type R) that it is not hopeless in every situation.

If I were buying a car to win DS, I wouldn't chose a twin, but they seem to be in the mix a surprising (to me) amount of the time. You can forget about winning pros, though. |

There's also more to life and driving than autox
If ultimate competitiveness in DS or whatever class was your goal, you'd be driving the car to have and be swapping cars every couple years and you wouldn't be in this thread. However for the rest of vast majority that love driving the twins every day or on the weekends...autox is a fun hobby. Ya win some, ya lose some.

...plus most of us are still saying it is a viable option to do well in its class. |
