And the Celica. In my mind it is far more Celica inspired than it is AE86.

I think a lot of the engineering and "idea" of what the car should be like to drive is very reminiscent of the ae86, however the styling is far more celica/2000gt.

To quote Wikipedia (too lazy to write it out".
"In classic Toyota code, the "A" represents the engine that came in the car (4A series), "E" represents the Corolla, "8" represents the fifth generation (E80 series) and "6" represents the variation within this generation."

The only difference between the two (when they had the same engine) is the 6 at the end which designates the two door model.

Your first picture shows a Sprinter which does look a bit different from the 4 door. If instead you use a picture of a Levin then it becomes obvious that it is a two door Corolla.

I know it is blasphemy to say such things on here but the Levin and Trueno are both just sport compact versions of the Corolla.
The versions imported into the US and Canada were nowhere near as well set up as the JDM ones and they really were never a hit here. Although very popular in Japan if it wasn't for a certain anime the car would have dropped off into total obscurity here.

The idea yes. The engineering no. There is no comparison between the two when the engineering is looked closely.

I guess what I mean by that is the ft86 and ae86 are both light weight fun to drive FR set up high revving 4 cylinder, so i guess mostly the idea.

Hold on, I'm looking at used Corolla XRS's and S's on Autotrader now....

Actually, the old (first gen) Matrix XRS would be a nice little car - 2zz-ge and 6-speed.

Yes, a Matrix may be just about perfect for what you are looking for.

I find it odd that only one prototype seems to have the production head/tail lights. If the car was that far along that they were testing the production spec pieces that they'd want them on all the prototypes wouldn't they?
I always thought those headlights were just some retrofits because they seem ugly, and wouldn't be production. Anyone have pics of what headlights he is referring to?
