quick question for those who have the noise and crunchy feeling.
do you still hear/feel it if you press down the clutch with a lot more force?

for me, it goes down smooth if i put an unnatural amount of pressure on the clutch. if i push down normally, you hear/feel it.*

It's from the moment the TOB makes contact with the pressure plate and all the way through the pedal stroke. It is, with 100% certainty, a failing TOB. It's the sound of an "unlubricated bearing".

I called the dealership and the service guy said that with this many miles (54k), that even though it's within it's warranty period, it's a considered a wear item and the likelihood of getting it warranty replaced is essentially zero. I had some choice words for him at that point.

If this car is going to require a new TOB every 55k miles I will considering trading it in and never looking back. I've probably done over a million miles in my life with manual transmissions and I've never had a TOB fail.

I see a golden aftermarket opportunity here. Well, silver at least.

I wonder if the TOB is shared with the WRX because they are complaining about the same.
If TOB is failing due to lack of lubrication how is it supposed to be JUST a warranty item?
I hope people complain in the NHTSA website about how the TOB failed on the freeway at 70mph and how it caused an unsafe incident and NHTSA sue the crap out of Subaru and Toyota

The bearing on my Toyota pickup lasted 221,000 miles - it seems like these cars of ours have a problem with everything 'clutch.' I finally got the slave cylinder recommended by Ultramaroon and the MTEC pedal spring. Hope to install them this week.

The whole "wear item" thing pisses me off. It's a car, the act of using it puts wear on every part of the car. The crankshaft bearings are a "wear item" but if they failed in 55k miles I bet you the warranty would cover that, or the wheel bearings, or the input shaft bearing etc etc etc.

A TOB should go at the very least 100k. It is what it is. I've removed, rebuilt and reinstalled a transmission in the paddock so I'm not worried about do the work. The only silver lining is that doing the repair myself is all of an afternoon and $175.

Just be glad you didn't have the dealer do it after a warranty claim inspection, you would have spent several times more for the same shoddy bearing and components. I wish I had done that myself, but I thought for sure they would have covered it. I thought wrong. Now I'm not so sure about future warranty coverage as Toyota's field tech deems the damage caused by "abuse" from "performance driving".

I'm sure a lot of people will not want to or have the confidence to pull the tranny so easily over $1000 repair bill. My squeak and crunch seems to be getting worse by the week but with winter I have no desire to pull the tranny so hope it gets me to 70k.

Parts and labor you're looking at closer to $1700 from the dealer if not warrantied.

I'm sure it varies depending on the labor rates and how many hours they charge for the job. Parts alone is about $600~700 flywheel, clutch and accessories. My dealership charges $120/hour labor rates.

If I changed out the clutch myself if would have cost me $300 or less in parts without new flywheel, or $30 just for the release bearing.

I have an automatic car, but if I thought my TOB was going out I'd take the car to an independent mechanic that gets less per hour and have him replace JUST the TOB- replacing perfectly good clutch parts is bullshit and robbery.

yep. dealer fisted me good. same oem junk back in...I mostly drive in 6th gear on the highway...the tob still melted. never once had a clutch or parts fail on me in over 25 years of driving manual. kinda offended on people telling me to learn how to drive manual. I don't ride the clutch and we have a dead peddle to rest my left foot on. the dealer gave me a 1 year unlimited mileage warranty on this clutch...but the clutch went in 2 years...and pretty sure it covers parts only not labor. dealer left a bad taste in my mouth and lost another sale. my wife was shopping for another forerunner there...told them to fuck off

Ok, so I have bookmarked the thread with the DIY tranny removal... looks really straightforward. I'm going to set a timer as I've bet myself I can do it start-to-finish in 5 hours or less. My SKF TOB came in yesterday and it's time to change the transmission oil anyway. No time like the present.

Black Friday?!?... No way, TOB replacement Friday! (maybe I'll change my engine oil too).
