The cylinders still are firing every 90 degress, which sounds EVEN, no rumble.

It is the ll-rr firing order, COMBINED with the unequal length header that creates the rumble.

With an EL header, the collector sees evenly spaced pulses. 1 medium, 2 medium, 3 medium, 4 medium length tube (time) pulses, all evenly spaced apart=no rumble.

With an Unequal length header, the collector sees 1 short, 2 short, 3 long, 4 long. Short-short, long-long, in that order creates the rumble.

I like el and uel aftermarket. I've had the pleasure to run: revworks, and borla uels, and hks el.

New 911 (yep, still boxers)

Yet another 911 (again, still a boxer)

There are two main reasons the (non FRS/BRZ) Subaru 4 cylinder boxers sound so different.

1) The stock manifolds are VERY UEL and merge the ports right at the head instead of having individual runners for each cylinder.
2) They have different firing orders than most engines, and fire both left cylinders then both right cylinders.

The firing order combined with the manifold design is why they rumble so much stock. If you swap out to an EL manifold you'll definitely get rid of the rumble.
I think we're saying the same thing. In general, UEL doesn't make the boxer rumble. Just because a car has UEL headers doesn't give it a rumble-sound.
It's a combination of the flat motor and uneven length headers that makes the unique sound in boobaru's.

It has nothing to do with the motor being flat...

[ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZBUVlbeAbU"]First s2000 with unequal length header, invidia catback sounds like subaru - YouTube[/ame]

Stock subaru's are more pronounced because of how UEL the manifolds are, and because they merge right off the head, but a UEL manifold alone will make it rumble even on an inline 4 with a "normal" firing order.

In terms of power gains, isn't the EL "better"?

Properly designed and optimized an EL is better than UEL, but a crappy EL will perform worse than a quality UEL.

I know not everyone will agree, but I would love to see individual EGT and AFR for each cylinder with a UEL header, I would worry that there would be quite a discrepancy.

Its called "boxer rumble" because that is less syllables than "Subaru rumble" or "unequal length header rumble" ;-) who else other than Subaru and Porsche use boxer engines?? That's right, no one. And how many Porsche's rumble?? Oh yeah... None ;-)
My quality EL headers do not rumble. When I worked a Subaru we had an older STI come in with EL headers. No rumble... Sounded similar to an sr20det ;-)

What are some good catted ELs? Looking around all I really see is JDL EL catted. Would the sound be significantly different (louder? tone?) vs stock headers?

Been looking forward a catted setup since I don't want to piss off my neigbhors.
