Get a catted header. That plus a catted front pipe will minimize the raspy noise.

I love my UEL headers. I've got a vid in my build thread of them. Its before the front pipe went on though so not quite as loud as it is now.

It's not the rasp just the tone I don't like about either. I have stock headder, top speed over pipe, top speed non catted/non resonated front pipe, stock midpipe and berk muffler delete and I love the tone it makes

THIS

I don't believe UEL headers are the sole cause of the boxer rumble. I think it's the flat engine itself and an UEL header enhances it. I can definitely attest to this... On a cold start I get a nice, subdued boxer rumble and I'm running stock headers with a Top Speed axleback. All my other exhaust components are stock.

That's me! Thanks for the kind words and droolysmiley!

Just to clarify for that video, while the camera may be in front of the speedo, the mic is actually mounted on the rear tow hook. One of these days I'll do an actual in car video.

Catback is Perrin resonated. Over/front pipe in the videos was a Nameless catted/helmholtzed but since I have changed to a Motiv overpipe and Motiv catted front pipe. Sound is exactly the same, minus the nasty tinny buzzing you can hear in those videos if you listen for it.

This setup is soooo DD friendly. Silent on the highways. Civil around town. Only a tiiiiiiny bit of drone once past 80mph, but still more than passes the GF test. I love it!

What I read somewhere else, can't remember, is if you want the ricey Honda sound, go EL. if you want the Subaru sound, go UEL.

My penny for you

You would think that might be the case, but with an equal length header, my cars sounds as smooth as any inline 4. ZERO rumble.

Stock headers are not equal length. They are somewhere in-between EL and the UEL aftermarket headers and WRX headers. I bet different exhausts and exhaust components can accentuate the rumble with the stock header.

With EL headers, these engines don't rumble.

The ft86speedfactory catted UEL doesn't sound like the typical Subaru as it smooths out in the higher RPMs and looses its boxer rumble

People keep saying our stock exhaust manifold is "slightly UEL" but I just don't see it ...
