Anyone with JDM tips...

Do they have to stick out so far? Or is there room to set them in more?

Yep. Here's a picture of the bottom where you bolt it in.

If I remember correctly, it's because they stick out that the US cars needed an alternative to the JDM tips.

If you look inside the JDM tips you will see 3 little tabs that stick out which prevent them from being set in any farther.

I simply grinded those 3 little tabs down with a small dremel and was able to slide the tips in almost flush with the bumper... looks much better I think.

Took me about 10 minutes.

True story: The main reason the North American tips are so tiny and set farther underneath the bumper is because the Dept. of Transportation felt the JDM tips stuck out too far and were a potential burn spot if anyone walked by and accidentally touched them... weird but true. It was not a cost saving measure as most think.

Cheers

My custom tips stick out an inch past my garnishes, which already stick out an inch from the bumper haha
