WRX/STI still uses EJ, new Impreza and BRZ use FA, but FA in BRZ has Toyota D4S.

Man If I had a dollar for every time someone claimed a turbo was coming to the BRZ/86/FR-S...

But here you have it, the man in charge of STI says the turbo will only be used on the GT300 car.

read my signature, The Twins were never meant to be world beaters, they were meant to be well-balanced, affordable, and fun

Or ever. I don't see a market here for it unless it has a big power bump. It will most likely be Japan only, more like the random STi special editions they have released there IMO.

Put about fifteen grand in it or more and if you have to, overnight parts from Japan.

Not only that but Subaru has zero history of offering that kind of thing via DIO.

I can't tell you how irritating these rumors are. But I'll explain it again anyway, the FA20 is using proprietary Toyota tech(Toyota's D4S) that was shared with Subaru specifically for this car. Toyota made a risk sharing this tech to meet emissions/power requirements and they get quite a bit of influence over how the car is designed and sold. There is only one engine slated for the Twins and it is N/A. While they might tweak the design or make incremental updates, there is still going to be only one engine in it and it's going to be N/A.

The new turbo engines for the Legacy GT and eventually the Impreza WRX/STI aren't getting this tech(Toyota D4S). Maybe ask yourselves why that is.

IMO a "well balanced" sports car includes having some grunt in a straight line. 6 second 0-60 jaunts and high 14 second quarter mile times are pretty slow when the car is compared to it's performance peers.

If Subaru doesn't offer a 280-300 hp version with 1-1.5 years then I'll be looking to the aftermarket for some extra "oomphh".

Just be prepared to be disappointed.

I honestly thing you don't have to do much. We saw what the car is capable of if it had 300hp.

the typical whp of a s2000 is about 201whp. (240hp) so if you can get this brz to those numbers which isn't hard, we are seeling people reach them without forced induction, then you have a pretty decent car with looks and performance.

The FA20 turbo motor has been out for a while - since 2010 in Japan. It utilizes a low, front mount turbocharger with an oil scavenge system for the turbocharger. It's not really new in any way, other than the fact that this year, it will be on the all-new Forester XT model available in America. Making that the debut for the turbo FA20 *in North America*.

This particular news of the FA20 turbo being used in a new car has been used by various media as the starting point for the rumor of a turbocharged BRZ/FR-S. However, all those stories have no other basis, and ignore many technical details, such as how the hell they'd shoehorn the catalytic converters in there.

See, Toyota/Subaru gave the Twins a low center of gravity by mounting the engine as low as possible. One of the trade-offs of this was that they route the exhaust through the sub-frame at the front. Simply put, this limits how much space they have for a catalytic converter post turbo. And they won't put one in pre-turbo, there's not enough exhaust manifold space. The turbocharger would be being placed where the current catalytic converter is in the OEM exhaust manifold.

It's not impossible, it can be done. But it would require a significant investment. And there's not much incentive right now when Subaru is selling every BRZ it can currently make, and Toyota much the same. Neither is in much mood to consider it until sales significantly drop off. Look how long it took for a turbo Miata/MX5 to appear.
