Maybe the “learning” is happening to the driver?

Once you (even sub-consciously) know how the AT will shift I think you find yourself doing different things with the gas pedal to make the auto-trans respond more the way you want it to. At least, that’s what i’ve caught myself doing the more i drive my frs and “learn” where it wants to shift...i can either encourage it to shift or discourage it depending on what i’m doing with the throttle.

Aren't you supposed to be able to do explicit override with the paddle shifters? I believe the owner's manual refers to this as Temporary Manual Mode.

My 2013 Recall edition is not learning. I tried to teach it a few different things too.

yes you can shift with the paddle while still in auto D mode and it will shift and hold the gear for maybe 10 seconds before going back to normal auto D mode.

I keep feeling like it does this and last night I was sure it did it since nobody is on the road and I was just having a little fun since the roads were barren.
I hate the auto deciding for me and always switch to manual mode as soon as I exit from the neighborhood or parking lot. So I have no complaints about the AT behavior.

Edit: You might want to check/clean your MAF sensor. I remember from past experience that AT responds to faults with MAF sensor.
