The z4 is the luxury man's Miata, which is why I don't think this car will be larger, or as large as a GT car if they want to maintain that characteristic. They may call this car the BMW GT Roadster or something else other than a Z5, and add a roadster to the lineup, which makes little sense. If this is the new Z5 (in small roadster form like past generations) then I doubt the Supra will be so small. Hence, why I believe the Supra will be on a separate sized chassis with a larger version of one of BMW's inline engines. These sports cars aren't there for huge profit margins. They are there for brand loyalty and enthusiasm. |

Interesting how Toyota isn't showing a closer to production concept like they did with the twins.

CoDeveloped with BMW but has Toyota engines in the Supra and BMW engines in the Z5, but shares the same chassis? What? What is the point of sharing a chassis? BMW has the 2, 4, 6, M convertible sedans, and the Z4 roadster. If they make the Z larger to match a GT sized car which is what the Supra was then this new Z5 will be the size of a 4 or 6 series convertible sedan, yet roadster looking. If they make the Supra smaller to match a roadster sized car, which is what the Z cars have been then the Supra would be the size of the BRZ or smaller like the S-FR. None of that makes sense. What is most likely is that Toyota is simply using the BMW engines in the Supra. None of their current cars use straight sixes, right? So instead of developing a motor for just the Supra (an extremely expensive thing to do) they are using BMW engines. By using a straight six the hood will maintain a long line, the handling will be similar, the sound will be similar. The Supra will be for a niche market and the best way to have success in a niche market is to respect the history of the car, and by teaming up with BMW, they are saving costs. It also makes sense that BMW is only providing engines because I can't see why they need anything from Toyota in developing any new sports car. It is not uncommon, also, for manufacturers to build or supply engines for other manufacturers. Again, my guess is the z5 will be the new z roadster with no Toyota or Supra influences, and is completely unrelated to the production of the Supra, except to say that they may be happening at the same time, and thus, the BMW-Supra power train, might be tested in parallel under BMW engineers. And again, I see the Supra on it's own chassis or on a BMW chassis taken from a 4 series or something else with BMW engines, but a Supra'esk Toyota designed body. This would be both cost effective for Toyota and realistic for the history of this car and brand image. |

I love roadsters but for this one I'll wait on the production model and see it in person before I make any judgement. Sure hope that the Supra will be beautiful, and I know I'm of few I would love a targa.

Looks a lot like an M6 convertible. The M6 is definitely more sedan than roadster, but I think BMW needs to keep the roadster smaller than the m4 or m6 convertible while keeping the Supra a GT car. Who can really guess these days? BMW has a grand coupe 4 series just to confuse things.

FT-1 Vanished from Toyota's website. RIP. Toyota will just continue with the uninspiring cars.

Any chance the Supra could not be based on the z4 but rather on the m8? Just a thought.
