Porsche's options are price inflated. But what you get for the models, without options, are worth it. $60k for a Cayman S is not overpriced. It's not cheap, and I can't afford it, but when I got out of the car after test driving it (and driving it hard, mind you) it was a feeling of admiration and awe.

I would imagine that a big reason that there are a lot of Porsche fans on here (myself included) is because enthusiasts for this car have a lot in common with your average Porsche fan:

-lightweight
-superb handling
-track-ability

Only thing the BRZ/FRS is missing is horsepower

There are so many Porsche fans here because if Porsche decided to put out a ~$26k 2+2 coupe it would pretty much be an 86. And goddamn are their cars beautiful;

I'm still bitter about the fact that when I was first looking for a car I found a really clean 911SC on Autotrader but the owner never called back. I'd still like to have that car... nice light blue, narrow body, air cooled noises...

Also, you may have heard that placing the engine and tranny aft of the rear axle is . . . let me think, what's the word . . . insane. Yes, that's it. Insane. That's why Porsche has been trying to kill it off for the last 30 years. But technology, as usual, screwed everything up, and they found a way to compensate for all the the design flaws by using 400 on-board computers.

Last year, I was thinking of buying an '88-89 3.2, but the driving experience was disappointing, My 944S2 was a better car.

I've never been much for the look of the 911, personally (the newer ones are a bit better though), and I honestly didn't think I would ever own a Porsche either. Then, as with several of the prior posters, I test drove a used Cayman S to compare it to the BRZ. As said earlier in this thread, after driving one, you end up wondering which limbs you can sell to purchase one (they really are that good). After driving the Cayman, I can safely say that no, the price does not seem inflated at all to me. I can't comment on the 911, as I haven't driven one, but the Cayman S is worth every penny of the $65-80k you would pay for a new one (not to mention the $30-40k you can pay for a used one in good to excellent condition).

That having been said, I agree that I wouldn't strive to own a car that I didn't like the appearance of. That's a large part of why I was never considering a 370Z, for example - it's in the same price range I was looking at, but before even reading the reviews of how it drove, I eliminated it purely on the basis of appearance.

You call it insane, I call it inspired. I've done the math on the rear vs. mid vs. front engine cars, making something so unstable gives it remarkable agility suited only to the best control systems (number one being top level drivers and number two being computers). You may think it isn't pretty, no argument should change your opinion, still a '67 911S is my number two dream car at the moment.

I disagree on the technology aspect, the market and people who bought Porsches screwed it up. I think the 911 should have died before they started using water cooling, the 914 and 914-6 should have killed it, the 928/924/944 should have killed it but people kept buying 911's, it would have been irresponsible for them to kill off the 911, they would have suffocated themselves. Everybody knows that if they spent as much developing the Cayman/Boxster as they did developing the 911 they would be truly staggering vehicles. And if they could have abandoned the 911 a long time ago maybe the Panamera would have gone in a different direction styling wise...

I'm just sad to see the 911 turning into more of a rich person's GT car. Back in the day they were small, light, pretty spartan and much less expensive. Sad to see the company catering to the Chinese / Russian oligarch market by making fantastically expensive, bigger, computer-controlled cars :\

I guess we still have the Boxster / Cayman though, which seem more sport-focused. Even those are getting stupid expensive though.

I wish I had the cash to scoop up a nice air-cooled machine before they end up well north of $50 grand. Those will be the ones to have in the long run-- modern cars don't have much character. This has come up several times for me: in 15 years, will my BRZ seem like a desirable thing? I don't know. I guess it may because it's sort of anachronistic to begin with: manual transmissions and lightweight cars are rare enough as it is, and I expect they'll only get rarer. But will it have the same level of appeal as a 15-year-old 911 does today? We'll see I guess. I kind of doubt it. More importantly, those 911s will still be around in another 15 years, and will seem even more old school.

@strat61caster: I respect what you're saying, strat. The 911 is a classic of its kind, and the late '60s-early '70s "S" models are super desirable right now. Any car that's a driver's car — that puts you in touch with the car and the road — like the 911 or the FR-S — can be fun as hell.

I have always wanted a Cayman ever since it came out, and now you can get a used one for a price that's not ridonkulous...BUT I'm still scared off by the maintenance and upkeep costs...

I guess the real question is, is the increase in amount of enjoyment of a Cayman worth increase in cost of ownership over the BRZ?

Well, the easiest way to figure that one out is simple: Go test drive one and see.

The answer would be a resounding yes if you do. Before I got my 987, I had intended to buy a 370Z roadster. Then I saw both cars and drove both. The spyder was definitely worth the extra money, so I sprung for it.

perhaps,but you can bet your ass,it would not be anywhere near as reliable
as the '86,and would be much more expensive to repair should it "break".you will never pay 26 k for a comparably equipped porsche,because the "alleged" ''superior german engineering" will cost substantially more than that,car for car. (lol!)...just sayin'
