My money is on the turbo theory rather than than the hydrolock theory since they didn't find evidence of that in the teardown. Like you say though there is not proof either way but they might argue in court that it was noted the car was modified. That might be enough evidence...

I hope you get it sorted man. If it were me I would take it on the chin and pay the 2k labour. At least you'll have a brand spanking new engine.

I guess you must have missed my post yesterday but I am paying the $2k labor. They called me yesterday saying the new engine came in but they told me if I change the clutch now, it's free installation so I ordered a new clutch from 86speed since it's a lot cheaper than Toyota's price... It is arriving today so I should have my car in a day or 2

New engine also comes with a 1 year unlimited mileage warranty so that's good too.

Sorry I missed that. Good idea about the clutch.

Well, if you come out of this with a warrantied engine (keep paperwork!), a new clutch, and your aftermarket warranty reimbursing you..... not the ideal situation throughout, but could have been a lot worse!

Yeah, 1 year unlimited mileage!

We'll see if the extended warranty will reimburse me the $2,000

The number of times this story has changed has my head spinning.

Got a great case and an eager lawyer. Um, no. Legal fees will be paid by Toyota because of aforementioned great case. Or not. New engine. Oh, no it isn't- Actually it's used. Um, no, actually it's new. This time. Labor will be paid. No. Maybe.

I don't even want to know what's next. But I bet when the next shoe drops, we all find out this has been one masterful troll. In which case, well played, sir. Or madam.

Or not.

Story hasn't been changed... Only thing I wasn't sure about was lawyer fees and whether it would be new or not...

If ai had paid for the engine, would've been used. But since toyota is paying for it, it's new.

Labor, I'm paying it. Now maybe I'll get a reimbursement from my extended warranty but idk.

Tl;Dr: I read this entire thread because the word “Hydrolock” was used and believe you received a lot of helpful advice.

During 2005, after Hurricane Katrina, I received a notice (I no longer have) that one should be careful buying a used car because flooded vehicles were being ‘sort of’ restored and shipped to California. It was also stated that bogus paperwork was created to hide the fact a car had been subjected to flood, etc.

Did you trace the history of your used vehicle ?

In this thread you mention Illinois:

Yeah I get what you're saying, but I doubt that if it had indeed been flooded before, that it would just now barely get the bent rod. Something must have weakened the rod at one point which, since they did note that the owner had some sort pf aftermarket parts that made Toyota not be able to work on the car until he removed them, make us believe that it was something like a turbo.

But your point is something I never thought about. Makes me want to pay even closer attention when buying used cars from different states.
