Mine now chirps even with Shell E0 91. I don't recall it doing so last year. Just 8.5k kms on the car. More so after a good drive. Hot weather + longer drive and I hear them.

Crickets only after car is warmed up. It can't be the fuel.

Just out of curiosity... I took my FRS to the dealer to have them inspect itfor chirping noise, and a noise in the rear that sounds like a click. Theycould not duplicate the noise in the back, and they told me there was no fixfor the chirping noise related to the fuel pump. After I got the disappoint answer,I decided to call the headquarters and open a repair order. The headquartersthen got back with the dealer and now, the dealer wants me to bring the car forthem to remove the fuel pump, just to get the part number. Has anybody gone throughthe same process? It's a little odd to me; I would think the headquarters wouldhave information about the part numbers a 2012 FRS is made of. My FRS is 20Know. |

:UPDATE: They just called. They said they are ordering a fuel pump and that next Thursday is the date to get her replaced. They were very nice about it. Find another dealership to work with if they are treating you that way. Last edited by BadMoon; 06-14-2013 at 01:05 PM. |

For as much as I want to order this "green dot" fuel pump and have it replaced, I just don't think this is going to do it. Be sure to post your results after 400-500 miles and beyond and also post ambient temps so we can get an idea. I noticed my crickets weren't so lively till temps warmed up.

Still on the stock HPFP I got back in July. I've noticed my crickets are louder than usual when I give it a free rev, now that's its been 90+F outside.

Well, the noisy crickets were just bugging me so I took my car to my local Scion dealer for them to have the official look. I dropped in on them with out an appointment, but they'll squeeze my car in. The service guy who wrote everything up thus far totally heard the crickets. I passed on the Service Bulletins (Scion & Suburu) to him that I printed up as well. He looked it up on the system and sure enough there it was listed. However, by the time the mechanic can have a look at my car the noisy crickets might go to sleep. They better wait the 10 minutes or more for the DI system to heat up so that the pump starts its symphony of cricket noise so that the mechanic can hear them. In any case, they'll have to order the parts and let me know when they'll be in. Then I can set up an appointment for the replacement. I'd be pissed if the mechanic says that he heard nothing out of the ordinary and can't validate a warranty repair.
On a side note; since the problem with the high pressure fuel pump clearly is heat related I feel, being a mechanical engineer, that Toyota/Suburu need to move that pump an inch or more off the engine block and get a heat shield between it and the engine. That way the pump won't heat up anywhere near as much to the point that the noisy crickets come back. That's my opinion as to a REAL fix.

For the record, mine got quieter as the ambient temps got higher, it isn't clear (anecdotally) what the cause is. |
