I'm going to be that guy.. But why not one of those Lexus hybrids.. Or even the prius. Yea it's boring but if she's going to be driving it most the time and you have your frs why not go practical..

My MKV was a pile of shit, but I'm loving what they've done with the MKVII. Roll the dice and give it a try. My notoriously unreliable Mini Cooper S (1st gen) has had one problem in 72k miles... the seat recline lever stuck and the dealer had to replace it. That is it.

And don't get a TDI. You get all the same VW problems but life ends at 3500RPM. If the GTI were terrible on gas, I'd be more inclined to go with a TDI, but my GTI averaged 31mpg over the 58k miles I had it. The GTI is just way too nice of a package to settle on the hokey seat, interior, and exterior of the TDI.

She has mentioned she likes the CT200h. From what I've heard it's no slouch either. My dad has a Prius and I would never buy one. The interior is super cheap and the driving position is a park bench with a wheel. Most uncomfortable car I've ever driven. My parents driveway is hilarious. 996 Targa, 2007 ISF......then Prius lol wtf

The only issue with the CT200h is the price. She really doesn't want to go used but we'll see once we test drive a bunch of cars when I get back. Thanks for the input man!

Thanks Tut. Great advice. What were they disagreeing with though. I'm still cloudy.

I've mentioned the Focus ST but it looks too aggressive to her. I'll see what she thinks of the Fiesta. Thanks!

Can't believe you guys give him shit for offering alternatives to one of the most mundane things on 4 wheels. If I got a free car you bet your ass I'd make it interesting, never waste time with boring.

Agreed OP shouldn't pressure the girlfriend into making the decision, but I didn't get the impression based on his posts, she seems to like the GTI of her own accord (pun) the only question is the reliability which seems to be a big factor for her family, hence the question.

As a result OP was reminded of the Golf with the same practicality, an efficient and bulletproof TDI (at least as far as mechanicals are concerned) and a noticeably lower price tag.

This post did not need to be made but it was bugging me.

Also for my money I'd check out the regular Fiesta with an EcoBoost, OP wants something he can brag about keeping up on the track or through the hills but when it comes down to it Ford is producing something comparable which may have a slightly better track record.

Edit: Shim below counterpoints my perception of the TDI.

My wife and I both love her TDI Sportwagen (manual), and the variable geometry turbo is nifty.

VW's TDI has plenty of problems, like HPFP failure, intercooler icing, carbon buildup making various things stick open or closed or clogged, and the entire stock exhaust-emissions system in general. I would expect the GTI to be more reliable.

I had a 2007 and really enjoyed the car. I learned a lot from it. First "sporty" car I've ever had. However, The minor changes they have tacked on since then have made the car considerably uglier IMO.

YES! Thank you so much! That is exactly what I was trying to get across. I mentioned the MK7 GTI to her and she has fallen in love with it. But we have yet to drive one so we'll see. I haven't pressured her into anything. I already have my BRZ if I want to have fun. But it will be nice when we take a trip together in her car to have something that is still fun AND more practical than my BRZ.

Her dad is a smart and mechanical guy, not a car enthusiast like us but he does take very good care of the family cars and keeps up with the maintenance intervals. I just didn't want to be the one that made her fall in love with the GTI and a few months later it's constantly at the dealer getting serviced. Her mom also enjoys driving as she has a AP2 S2000 for the summer months as there are two other vehicles that fit the practicality checkbox, so the S2K is her summer toy.

Her parents are great people and we get along very very well. They are not the type to throw it in my face if the GTI becomes a lemon. However, I will feel like I did them a disservice by recommending a car that is outside their "comfort zone" and it didn't pan out.

Thank you so much @strat61caster for understanding where I'm coming from.

lol Just wanted some reliability based opinions of the GTI.

@Bg8780 FYI some forum etiquette: combine your posts, it's generally frowned upon to double, triple, and quadruple post in a row. It's a hold over from when post count meant something but still irks some people.
