I'm glad to have made the switch from supporting desktops (PCs and Citrix) to working with big iron (z/OS) almost two years ago. I'm just starting out as a lowly front line operator but it's very rewarding when even higher ranking staff / support teams depend on my expertise driving the truck from time to time.

With desktops you only get respect from the end users. Other IT staff thought we were trailer trash and we weren't even front line (those helpless desk folks took all the abuse from all fronts).

Pfff look at what modern scrum and agile did to the Max 8 plane.

When I was learning "Computer Science" almost every concept came from the 60's, pretty much only object oriented programming was slightly newer.

I go back further than that. First job was providing internal support the original IBM PC as an intern at IBM in Manassas, VA.

Also, if you're going to show a laptop you should at least go Canadian with the Hyperion PC. It was the first IBM "compatible" portable and beat Compaq to market by about 2 months. It was also smaller, fittin under an airline seat). They were sold to the U.S. government under an Anderson-Jacobson brand when I worked there.




I used the carrying case as a carry-on bag for almost 20 years because it was the perfect optimized size for under the seat and sturdy as hell.

Hmm. Not sure I’ve ever met an IT guy that found their job boring or regrets their decision. I would rather have completely dynamic days vs literally doing the same routine day after day. Some IT jobs can be boring but most aren’t.

I avoid leadership at work since I don't want them interfering with my workouts with clients. As well less leadership lurking allows me to experiment. But having someone breathing down my back annoys me considering I am seasoned enough that I don't need my hand held.

Grid Computers were great for their time, and flew on the Space Shuttle.

It was the first "clamshell" computer or what we now think of as laptops.

When GRiD first came out I was working at a company in Florida that was looking to make a large purchase of laptops. Grid was putting the hard sell on us and I got to use the one that flew on the Space Shuttle for a couple of weeks (or at least that is what I was told, but it did have the extra fan that was required to pull air through it, so that's my story and I'm sticking with it)

As I recall (and verified through Wikipedia) Tandy eventually bought them, then that ended up being purchased by AST then Samsung.

Oh yes, I reckon I should give @DarkPira7e , a straight answer.

When I was a kid, I was taught to address adults as, Mr., Mrs., Doctor, or Uncle/Aunt, Grandpa/Grandma, Mom/Dad, as the case my be.

When I was in college, I addressed instructors as Professor (last name).

When I was in the Army, I addressed all fellow soldiers as to their rank, followed by their last name. Even when I was intoxicated in the Officers Club, I still addressed junior officers by their rank and last name. Why? Because it's tough to send a soldier on a risky mission if you are on a first name basis with them. As far as other officers of equal rank, I would address them by their first name, if I liked them, and by their rank followed by their last name, if I didn't.

Back in civilian life, working in a research environment, I would address other professional people that I met as Dr. (last name), until they corrected me or told me to just call them by their first name.

In the corporate HQ world (Stauffer Chemical Company), I would usually address people by their first names. Why? Because by the time people got to that level, "titles" didn't mean shit. Positioning and salary was all that mattered.

When I was working in a higher education/research environment (IITRI) (Illinois Institute of Technology Research Institute), I addressed the people I met as Dr. (last name) which was correct 90% of the time. Most of them expected that.

When I was working for a Biotechnology start up company (TSI) (Transgenic Sciences Inc.) everybody called everybody else by their first name, as they scurried around in their jeans and sweatshirts, placing and adjusting mirrors, forming smoke and preparing for an IPO.

As a real estate broker (Coldwell Banker), I addressed people by their first names, unless they were a medical doctor client. If anyone tried to "pull rank" on me, I would tell them to f**k off and go find another broker.

In my retirement years, I am known as Dad, Pa-pa or (whatever mrs humfrz decides to call me, depending on the situation.) I usually address people as sir or hon, because I usually can't remember either their first or last name.
