Varex Exhaust - Loud to Quiet Anytime You Want!

So my car is nearly two years old now, and one of the first things I did to it was pick up a Varex exhaust used from @mad_sb! I had only seen a varex exhaust in videos from the popular youtube show Varex, but knew I had to have one. Fo a basic understanding of what went into this original varex exhaust head straight on over to the original thread -> http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=47080

Anyway, since then I decided that bigger (to a point) is better, so I switched out all of the piping and muffler to run a full 2.75" catback in prep for some minor FI over the winter! I honestly could not be more happy with this exhaust and I think a lot more companies should implement valves into their exhausts!

If you don't feel like reading the thread I posted earlier, basically a "Varex" is a remote controlled muffler that can open and close a small valve within, when closed the gasses must travel through the muffler like any other OEM muffler, but when open its a straight through muffler delete. Its very difficult to show on video due to frequency but there is a MASSIVE difference in outside volume and the car goes from Drone city to quieter OEM in the cabin no problem!
Here's a little video showing the Varex catback V2 with my PLM overpipe and HKS dual resonated exhaust. Skip to 2:00 for some nice pops and bangs!

I don't like it either. Very Raspy. It also sounds like the muffler has a leak when the valved is closed.

yeah :/ the rasp is kind of a problem I'm finding, i tried to get rid of it with the hks front pipe but to no avail... do you guys have any suggestions on how to get rid of it or does it naturally just come with a muffler delete or is it the stock header?

I think the closed sound is more to do with the mics frequency range, it sounds exactly like stock in person

I am going to say muffler delete. No rasp in my set-up, although it has one small muffler.

If you get a header it will just sound even worse in my opnion. It just sounds un-refined.

I had some pretty bad rasp with my ptuning headers. The dual resonated HKS front pipe cleaned it up nicely. Running a muffler delete should be a "race car only" thing. Obnoxious on the street.

Seems a bit gimmicky to me, but I don't mind the sound at all. Wish I had something like that when I had the openflash headers and Tomei 60r

My buddy has it on his 08 350Z. He loves it, the only time there is rasp is when the exhaust is cold. Stupid loud when its open, and near stock when its closed. IIRC he said it was a bit raspy until it was broken in.

Edit: I wonder if the stock front help.

You can see in original thread I posted that the DB changes are pretty high, its hard to show on video but the low frequency sounds are fully removed by closing varex which makes my neighbours less likely to murder me :p

to say I'm not a fan of the way this sounds would be putting it mildly. But I think having a controllabe exhaust valve is a cool idea.

Do you have an OFT, or how is your car tuned? I have tuned out the rasp in my open cat-less exhaust by slightly lowering my AVCS Intake advance in those areas where rasp occurred. A better way, I've heard, is to install a front pipe with a Helmholst resonator attached. I wish the resonators themselves were available, then I could just wheel it into a muffler shop, have them holesaw the pipe where there's room, and have it welded on to my existing exhaust, instead of having to buy a whole new pipe.
