Tomei titanium front pipe users??
Hello all.
Last year I purchased a Tomei titanium front pipe, which I installed on my car along with the rest of a mainly custom titanium exhaust. Since then, I have had nothing but problems with this thing. It started to crack at the welds, and I contacted the seller. He replaced it without hesitation, so that was awesome. After some more time on the car, it started to crack on the welds again. This time, I didn't want to mess with shipping and everything, so I said, screw it. I went to a local shop that has a great reputation for fab work and had it repaired. Along with fixing the weld, he fabbed a spacer out of resin, for the mounting bracket, to soften some of the vibration. A month later, it starts to crack on the other weld!! What gives? LOL. Has anyone else had problems like this? I'd like to know if it is the Tomei pipe, or just my setup is too rigid or something and thats what is causing the problem? Thanks in advance for the help. |

How so? It uses all stock mounting locations and it is much lighter than stock.

Sounds like your custom exhaust is putting undue stress on the welds, or just has bad welds.

Which has bad welds? The exhaust or the Tomei pipe? My guess is the Tomei pipe. Which is a little disheartening, because I have used their stuff before with great results. Their reputation for quality has always been great, so it makes me think that they moved their manufacturing to a different location. Outsourcing will ruin the world!! lol

How is it bolted together? Is it using the stock donut gasket or a regular bolt/nut? How are your exhaust hangers? How much movement do you have? Did you have to have the custom exhaust at a certain angle to mount it? A lot of people don't realize why welds on exhausts break in the first place. It's usually because the entire system will break at the weakest point, especially when non-OEM parts are used. The jig used to fab the exhaust is key... and it's also why cheap exhausts fail, because they just buy an existing exhaust and copy the flange/hanger locations instead of actual R&D on a physical car. -alex Edit: as for your front pipe problem, it may work fine. I'm just saying that your custom exhaust may be exposing the current weakest link in the system. |

We haven't experienced any issues with the Tomei FPs, but we have encountered a few units with the some cracking at the weld on the Tomei catbacks which Tomei has been warrantying.

TOMEI 80MM EXPREME TEST PIPE
I have been having similar issues with the 80MM Ti catless front pipe. I have the Tomei UEL catless header, Tomei overpipe, and Greddy evo4 3" catback. I started seeing cracks in the weld connecting the pipe to the bell housing frame about 9 months ago. I just checked the connection this weekend and saw that one of the weld points to the pipe has completely fractured through!!! I attached a photo from 9 months ago when I first noticed the cracks, and another that I took this weekend. I have had no previous reply from Tomei and I have just emailed them again today about the issue.. anyone else see something like this?
Lucky me there is still half a weld left for now, I made a resin shim to go in between the exhaust hangar and mount to try and absorb some of the vibrations from the Catless UEL. Last edited by Kynans; 05-04-2020 at 04:34 PM. Reason: Spelling |
