The only thing that has kept us from going forward is the cost to the end user.

I'm not sure how much people will spend to get that last bit of N/A power... and those who will be racing, what the rules will say about a mani swap

Motordyne is working on a new intake manifold for the FRS/BRZ now.
Its too early to say what the results will be but even modest changes to the intake runners can significantly change the power curve.

Below is an example of what we did on a Nissan 350Z. Very large gains in power and torque. If gains like this can be made on the FRS/BRZ, it would be awesome.

We will soon see.

The plastic IM is better than any stock cast aluminum one; it's less susceptible to conducting heat from the engine bay and flows more as well. A replacement will likely be unnecessary for 90-95% of consumers. Opposed piston engine manifolds typically don't see large gains; at most you gain at the top end and lose at the bottom end just because they're hard to design (or rather, a good design is too expensive for the average consumer to justify and knock-offs soon follow). That plastic manifold is advanced technology, bro.

Yeah on the turbo EJ2xx motors there have been some gains to be found with manifold swaps but only at huge power levels and they sacrifice low end power. However, the FA20 is a whole different engine compared to those so it will be interesting to see how well Subaru designed the factory manifold. And like the above guy said, most aftermarket manifolds are $1k+ in price.

In the past the NA engines have had pretty good manifolds, even for FI applications. Some guys even swap the NA manifolds onto the turbo engines.

dwx, Indeed. 2.5RS manifolds are the go-to for cheap off the shelf large plenum manifolds for the STi. Go early enough and aside from injector and rail adaptation, you ditch the TGV's as well.

We certainly have some ideas to play with on this engine with and without ITB's that I'm certain can beat the factory manifold handily. As for heat soak concerns with Aluminum parts vs. injection molded, most of these issues can be handled with a two piece manifold running composite lower and tubular upper. Phenolic spacers work wonders in those applications as well and we have the ability to have them silicone beaded to get a perfect seal without any goop or spray hassle.

Either way, we're doin it. It's another area we want to invest time in and with a car permanently in house now, we're eager to use its availability to do more iterative testing and learn some new stuff.

waiting for this. I think we could see some nice gains from a mani swap once boosted

ITBs, would sound beastly. I am curious how well the electronic throttle will work with them.

Wasnt this due to the oem manifold starving the rear 2 cylinders? That was a older z issue. I don't think the frs would gain like that. ive been waiting on a manifold to see if we can find a real weak spot in the setup and not this little 5hp at 7100rpm from $2000 in exhaust parts lol

Did you notice that that Motordyne post is from 2012 and their last post was the 22nd of the same month?
I suspected not.
