*California* 2013 Valve Spring Recall
So just received my registration renewal in the mail today. Was looking around and read that ppl were able to register without going through with the recall.
NOT ANYMORE! With all these horror stories going around I don't want my engine to fail when I'm driving hours back to school soon. Which dealerships in the bay area are the ones to go to? |

Good luck. FWIW I had to get my BRZ done before I could buy it. Just got my first post-recall Blackstone Labs oil analysis back. 102k miles (5.5k miles on the oil) and it looked good.
Only anomalies were : 24ppm Iron (from new parts wearin and a fairly punishing AutoX school), and 94ppm of silicone from the new gasket material wearing in and the assembly lube. Zero water or antifreeze, <0.5% fuel, TBN 3.7, 0.1% insolubles. It's not a death knell, just a chance of being unlucky. And being unlucky often results in a new shortblock and rebuilt heads on Toyota/Subaru's dime so... |

I'm not the OP but I'm in the same situation. I made an appointment at Stevens Creek Subaru and will cross fingers. At least it's been awhile now so they probably have things sorted out better than a few months ago.

Ah. Just realized he has a Subaru. In my experience, the Subaru dealers are awful.

BASICALLY= Almost all the incidents with recall related failure are with Toyota's not b/c of the specific car but their failed attempt to do a simple valve replacement job, and the incompetence of their dealership mechanics. Subaru dealers may suck but Toyota sucks a lot worse in my experience. I would personally take it to Livermore if I had the chance to do it over or the time to go there. |

I went to Toyota Sunnyvale. They did cause an oil leak through the dipstick O ring but the the valve spring recall itself seems to be fine. My oil analysis looks OK.

And the procedure for changing the springs and sealing the FA20 is radically different than any other Subaru engine. If anything the Subaru techs can screw it up easier since they are used to one way and probably don't even look at the instructions. This whole "Toyota techs don't know how to work on boxer engines" is pure bullshit. It isn't like they have never been exposed to anything but Toyota engines in their whole career. A 10 year old with no experience could successfully do the work if they just follow the instructions. Not following them and messing engines up is not a Toyota issue it is an individual one.
