Passenger seat movement lock? (stock setup) - Toyota GR86, 86, FR-S and Subaru BRZ Forum & Owners Community

On Euro spec models (probably worldwide) the driver's seat reclines and slides forwards and backwards. So does the passenger seat.

However the driver's seat will lock independently into position both in the recline and forward/backward movement, but the passenger seat just slides forwards/backwards freely when it's reclined towards the front. Because of this, it's a huge annoyance getting a child seat into the back of the car as the front passenger seat keeps bumping into me whilst I install the child seat.

Anyone know what I need to install/modify to get the passenger seat to behave like the driver's seat?

This is one of my biggest gripes with this car lol. What I have found is that if you slide the seat forward and slightly recline the seat back, it will lock into place.

Imho one of choices - to buy used or new seat for RHD market (UKDM/JDM) if there is difference in between them depending on which side they are. I've seen cases when people do that for other reasons (eg. passenger seat has no height adjustment, so some longer people may want that for extra headroom, or seen opposite case, for short g/f passenger sake in RHD car wish to get LHD driver seat with extra height adjustment), so why not for locking mechanism? Whole seat, especially if new, might be a bit on expensive side. Maybe individual parts that are different, can be sourced.
If there is no difference between seats depending on which side they are, then probably even if not other-hand drive car's driver's seat, one can get second driver's seat from same DM .. there are people installing aftermarket bucket seats and doing stock parts part-out. Or buying used seat from totaled cars in breaker yards.

This is what I do too -- Move the seat all the way forward then slightly tilt the passenger seat and it will lock.

Just tried this for 15 minutes. I could not find any combo of tilt and forward that locks the seat. It has now become a challenge and I will not rest until it either locks or I can conclusively say it will never do so.

My solution using a couple pair of tennis shoes I keep in the car. Whenever I need to load stuff in the back, I wedge the shoes in the footwells on the rails and it holds the seat at it maximum forward position.

Just tried this, whilst I did get it to lock the opening becomes too constricted to manoeuvre the child seat into place.

Update:

I took out both front seats and dropped them off at my local Toyota workshop in Denmark. I asked them if they could find out what mechanism keeps the drivers seat from sliding back and if they could then order the parts needed to so the passenger side would behave the same way.

Well, they couldn't figure it out without dismantling the drivers seat and they estimated that with the work hours involved plus the cost of the spare parts, that it would be cheaper to source a RHD drivers seat instead.

I can buy a set of front seats from a chap in the UK, but his best offer with shipping was £775 ($1,075). Not sure I want to fork out that much to solve this issue, though it is tempting to have the set of passenger seats as living room chairs. They are comfy for the TV room!

TL;DR
Find a RHD drivers seat from England/Australia/Japan, install it in your car and be happy.

What I do to lock it forward is push down slightly on the bar that is used to slide the seat forward/backward. So I pull the lever on the side which leans the seat forward and then slides all the way up to the dash. Then I reach down under the seat and press down slightly on the bar and the seat locks. To unlock it I have to pull back up on that bar though. Hard to explain in text. Maybe I should make a video.

There's a cable in the passenger seat for that mechanism. It can be disconnected.
