EDIT: This is with my stock FR-S. Using e-85 or FI, even a tune might change the most effective parts of the powerband. That said, still seems unnecessary to me.
I've been driving since 15k with E85 & 93oct (currently at 65k), the difference is there every time I switch fuels. It could be just my car, the mods and the way I drive. I think since E85 makes the engine less lazy it's easier for me to shift.

This is what I do to minimize grinding:

* Precise and quick shift and no granny shift.
* No rev match shift. Yes, my 5th gear hates rev match.
* No down shift above 3k.
* E85 also minimize 5th gear grinding. Weird right? But it does helps..
By grinding, do you hear the screeching sound? Or the notchy sound?

I got everything. The faint honk/goose/screeching used to be at 3.5k rpm but now it's moved to 5k and above..

Happy to report that replacing the OEM transmission fluid with Motul 300 solved the downshift from 6th to 5th at high speeds.

Guess I'll have to try my luck with Motul 300.

Hope it works for you as well. Overall all the shifts are smoother (not notchy) and not hard to shift into 1st or 3rd like sometimes was the case before.

Might as well save your clutch if you are just on the highway.
? thought part of the point of getting a manual was to enjoy shifting so it is odd that you think those are the only valid reasons to downshift.. you aren't even hitting 3 K RPM at 70 MPH in 6th gear so dropping down to 5th should be nothing and certainly preferable if ya want to pass quickly...personally I just stay in 5th and only go to 6th for longer drives on the highway. from my experience, this gearbox does not like slop with the throws or clutch work

I fully agree. When you're at 70mph if you want to pass someone, staying in 6th makes it a fairly slow pass. This is a sports car, being able to downshift from 6th to 5th at a high speed is something basic.

Dropping to 4th is quicker.

This isn't a "manual" thing, I do this all the time with the AT, and in fact as @strat61caster mentions below, I usually drop to 4th (double-tap on the paddles). I've done it so much at this point it's second nature.

indeed, I get that dropping gears has nothing to do with the type of trans, just found it was quite odd that the poster didn't think it was logical for a driver to drop a gear on a MT unless they are hooning around..

Downshifting at 70mph to pass for whatever reason is normal If someone say's not to do this for any reason they need to get an automatic.
