Thanks for the guide Akuma!

Quick question does connecting the wires involve any soldering/crimping or are you just plugging them into the harnesses?

great DIY! 2 questions:
1) would this proceedure be any different for a Double din HU that had Carplay?
2) Is there any way that you saw that would allow you to reuse the factory microphone?

Yes, you would need a way to connect a few wires together. In my guide and the pictures shown, I used butt connectors, to show that it can easily be done by anyone. You can solder wires together if you want to.

You can use this guide to see what the factory wires and pins are, so you'll be able to tell where to connect the wires. A different head unit will obviously use different wiring and connections, but the factory connectors will be the same, so just follow the pins and you should be fine.

I haven't tried it myself, but I hear it's not worth the trouble and that the factory mic isn't that good to begin with. It's been a while since I checked, but, I believe the mic is amplified and needs power, most likely you have to convert it to 5v. There's a pin out of the 28 pin harness on the forums that show where you need to connect the mic wires. You would then connect the wires to a 3.5mm plug and plug that into the head unit.

Joying removed the cd drive for the new models and I don't recommend getting the old models, they are a bit slow. If you're talking about playing music in general, then yes, you can play music (through the sd card, usb drive, internal memory, bluetooth, radio, etc) while the Torque app is running. Torque runs great, just gotta connect it to bluetooth first.

I'm about to attempt this. Has anyone tried this harness from joying? It looks like it includes the 28pin connector for camera output? Comments?

I definitely don't see a 12<>6 volt converter

I can see the the 6, 10, and 28 pin plugs. Looks like there are extra not needed and will mostly likely require rewiring? Seems nice that it includes the 28 pin though?

Are you saying that this harness will work out of the box, no modifying? Cause I'm running into issues with this DIY. Reverse camera is a black screen, I'm assuming fault on my own somewhere with that. And only the mode button on my steering wheel controls is registering. Which is strange, I'd figure it would be an all or nothing. This is on a 2017 86, not sure if there are differences from the BRZ.

That harness will not make your reverse camera work. You need to try their brZ harness (no one has tried yet that I can find) or build your own from other options you can find on this forum ( sorry I can't link you at the moment. ). Basically you need to make some RCAs to one of the plugs and use a 12v to 5v converter to tell the camera to turn on. I'm not completely sure why that last part is necessary (maybe the stock head unit has a 5v output). Anyway. Good luck

Recheck how you wired the DROK converter and make sure it matches my wiring. If the screen turns black when you put it in reverse, then the camera is either not being powered or there's no video signal going into the HU?

Regarding the steering wheel controls, do you have a Joying head unit or something else? If it's Joying, did you use the steering wheel app to map the buttons to the head unit? Make sure you hold the steering wheel button, then press the desired function on the head unit to map it.

I bought one tonight, I have all the wiring harnesses to make one right now though. I'll let you guys know if it works next month when I get it.

I used Akuma's wiring with the DROK 12 to 6v converter and the reverse cam worked me.

I installed a Pioneer AVIC-5200NEX into my 2017 BRZ and got it working.

I however cannot get my Steering wheel controls to retain yet. Still trying to figure that out, but I am ever so close, studying the iDataLink RR product wiring patterns.

Also, I am going to order another DROK (12 to 5 v converter) because that is the last wire I need to get the OEM microphone working... I have all the other wires in place.
