OK, so Redline or OEM fluid recommended. Think I will be doing 30K change after reading this as well.

I would stick to the OEM fluid, it's very difficult to get 100% of the fluid out when doing an AT change unless you flush it which would be very expensive to do every 30k miles. I'll stick with a drain and fill using the factory fluid every 30-45k miles depending on driving style.

Oh yeah, good point. If just draining and filling/changing without the flush some of the new will mix with old so in that case using same fluid is ideal.

In our experience the mixing of either Amsoil Synthetic or Redline High Temp ATF is perfectly fine, they are built to mix with the OEM fluids otherwise anyone who changed to a different fluid would have issues on their cars. That may have been true back in the 70s and 80s but not with modern Synthetic ATF.

I stopped by a local Subaru dealer and asked about a AT service. They quoted me 52.50 plus fluids (@9.06QT). I figure that it'll take 6QTs. That'd be around 110.00ish Vs 250 at the Scion dealer.

Is this price quote JUST for a AT fluid change? or is this like a package that they also change other things?

I asked them how much to change the AT fluid, and that was the number they gave me. Seems like the Subaru dealer is the way to go.

I thought Subaru dealers refused to work on the FRS? Even though they are bascially the same car?

Actually reading it through, they wrote the instructions really obtusely.

Basically, it's 3x drain/overfills @ 2.1Quarts. So you'll need 6.3 US Quarts.

drain/overfill, engine on, Park to M & back
drain/overfill, engine on, Park to M & back
drain/overfill, bring oil to "proper" temp, & drain through overflow until it's thin as a thread.
tighten everything to spec.

The instructions are obtuse because of the jumping around and slight differences in procedures on the first, second and third drain & overfills.

We generally do our customers ATF on a 30k interval changing out about 1/3 to 1/2 of the total capacity during that change. We refill the exact amount that we remove so we know it has the proper amount in there. We haven't done any of the BRZ/FRS yet so we will have to investigate this procedure before we do one and see what we think of it.

Heck, don't feel bad about spending $250 on AT flush service...
I took my previous A4 to dealer for AT service and they quoted 970...

Audi auto trans fluid costs 479+ JUST for parts... plus they charge like 2-3 hr for labor (reset trans module, update code, yadayada)

Did you try calling subaru? If they're friendly, they might take your car for service. I used to take A4 to VW dealership for service all the time.

They generally will take in any work you bring them, however they won't do warranty work for obvious reasons.
