With gentle driving and careful throttle my 70 Coronet R/T got about 8 MPG. If I opened up all 3 carbs (for 6 barrels) you could watch the needle drop and I doubt I was getting 2. It was not unknown to use up a whole 20 gallon tank in a day. Now, gas cost 60 cents a gallon and you may think that is cheap but my army pay was $33 a day so burning gas was an expensive hobby. When I bought my Corvair and got a whopping 15 MPG I felt like I was rich all of a sudden. All in all even the very worst mileage now seems damned good.

Best car I had was my last one. It too was a first model year. That base, 1.8 liter Eclipse got an easy 42 MPG. Sixteen years I squeezed out of it. RIP

LOL more than double the MPG what I got with the 2L, turbo, AWD Talon. If I took it real easy I managed to pull off about a 20. More often in the 16 to 18 range though.

I had an '81 Civic 5 speed that I had to flog to get under 35mpg. Regular driving without trying was 40+ and I broke 50 many times on road trips. All of that was with a cracked head and I had to stop about every 150 miles to replace the #3 spark plug. I had a '79 Fiesta Sport (2 barrel Weber progressive) that got 45+ on the highway without even trying. Back then I figured by now I'd be able to have a car that was fun to drive and got 50+ all the time but safety regs and emissions bs have kept the numbers way down. Too bad...

I get 29 with mixed driving. My old GenCoupe 2.0T got 24 with the same driving. I had a Nissan Versa econobox before that and it got 34 if I really went easy, 31 otherwise. That Versa had a 1.8L engine, not fun to drive, no balls at all and with the same sort of driving, my FRS gets me only 3 MPG less but a LOT more fun and performance.
I don't belive what the sticker says on a car or what the claimed MPG is. I don't believe in what most people tell me they get in MPG either simply because many people don't know how to calculate it (basic math is beyond an astounding number of people) or simply lie to make themselves feel better. |

Hayloft, yes, that place in a barn where you stacked hay ..... summer time, tin roof, lose floorboards, 90 degrees F outside, 110 in the loft, 90% humidity, hay bales weighing half what you did, hay chaff sticking to your sweaty back ...... get the picture. MORE HAY! ....... as you took a big swig of well water out of a gallon glass jug ..... Wintertime ...... play "fort" in the air passages within the haystacks ...... a place to try to seduce your female cousins....... I'm sorry, I had a flashback ......... humfrz |

I'm about half on the highway, half city. These cars really eat a LOT more gas in city driving, the delta between city and highway is huge. Congrats on figuring that out all by your onesies. Here's a cookie.

I average 28mpg on 93 oct, and 20mpg on e85. It would be better but I have a lead foot and I probably hit redline at least once every time I drive it.
I'd say i'm about 70/30 highway/city, with half of the highway in traffic under 35mph. My 240sx got 21 when it wasn't boosted, and in the high teens when it was. |
