Yes, a USB powered seagate 250GB hard drive works. You have to reformat it tpo FAT32. and don't put too many files in each folder. For an example, I have the Rolling Stone 500 greatest albums all on the hard drive in folders each containing 50 files. (1-50, 51-100, etc.) and it works great.

Does not FAT32 have limit on partition size that would prevent using all the available memory?

I want to look into this as well since the stock stereo's interface with my iPod classic sucks. Every time I want to move to a different letter (if searching by album for example) it takes a few seconds to read through all the choices. Makes searching a bitch.

What is it like with an external HD? You can get crazy small USB drives now in 128 GB, and that is enough for my entire music library.

Wikipedia puts the limit somewhere in the terabyte range.

if you organize your music into files and playlists, you can quickly scroll down to a specific Folder, open it and then scroll down to a specific album. if you have all your files in one folder it would be a pain to scroll through everythkng, everytime.

That's what I was looking to do use it 128g USB drive. Some head units say 32gb usb. So dose that mean it can only use up to a 32?
