They are fastback HATCHbacks.
And "fastback" also applies to cars that are NOT hatchbacks! Pretty much means there's a straight(ish) sloping line from the back window all the way to the back of the car, whether the car has a trunk or a hatchback.

Only semi-recently has the term "hatchback" been (wrongly IMO) constrained to specifically mean a WAGON type of rear hatch.

A 5-door Mazda3 is, to ME, more a small wagon than a "hatchback".

But I'm an oldish dude... No one would have ever called a 70s wagon a "hatchback", but Zs and RX-7s and the like most definitely *were* hatchbacks.

Yeah, we term them liftbacks, a hatchback is a Golf looking thing.

A fastback is American for our liftback.

Disclaimer: #terminology

I call the twins sports coupes.

Again

LOL

Shit gets complicated

TLDR: I dislike the look of "hot hatches".

Disclaimer" I'm typically over opinionated but generally have a care factor of zero with such things.

I hope OP has informed Motoring.au, he could start a whole new round of self-referenced speculation. IN CAPS.

Maybe Toyota pulls a Ford and the Next gen 86 will be like a next gen Mustang: an electric suv.

Seriously this shouldn't be so hard. A liftback is a fastback with a hatch. Nuff said.
