I used black mosquito/flyscreen mesh.

I smeared black silicone rubber all over both sides first. I applied it through the mesh onto a sheet of newspaper and the excess remained on the paper when the mesh was peeled off (quickly before it had a chance to cure). The holes are fully open. After curing I did the other side and it worked the same. My theory was it would make it last longer and perhaps reduce bugs sticking (think silicone rubber cooking items).

It has worked better than I ever hoped in every way. As a prototype, for a 3000Km trip I put the mesh over the front of the grille but as it is black and glossy it looks ok to me so it remains. If it was behind the grille I reckon bugs would get stuck between. Although the mesh is fine there is no overheating and we get 47 degree celsius days.

Having noticed dirt/dust sticking to silicone rubber around the home (static attraction?) I expected the screen would accumulate but that is not the case. I think it just falls off when I screech to a halt.

After 9 months of all sorts of weather but snow I am very happy.

I know this is a DIY thread so this may not belong here, but to anyone looking for a nice grille without all the custom work, there's one available by a company called Grillcraft. Here's how it looks.

$178 on Amazon currently.

That being said.. I love the look of OP's.

Referred several BRZ owners to this thread so this is a bump for them. Also re-uploading missing pictures in first post.

This is overdue, but way cool to have met @Gunman 400 miles away at a C&C back in Dec 2014 who used this mod

Did mine make in March and it's still holding up great. It came pre-painted black from Lowes.

You can drop the panels on the underside, and do it, that's how I did mine.

I didn't have the lip on mine when I put in the screen, but I don't think you'll have to, other than any push rivets that they share...2 maybe?)
