CEL U0073 - Network

Got a CEL light on the way to work this morning. Both the slip and engine lights came on. When I got to work I shut the car off and turned it back on, the slip light went away but the engine light was still on.

Mods: K&N CAI, Borla header back, Visconti tuned.

The car runs fine, I was just wondering if it's something serious or if I should just clear the code? Thanks in advance guys.

Were you running the Torque app on your phone/tablet by any chance? If you do not close the app after shutting the car off you will get that code when you start the car again with the app still running.

I've got an android head unit. Torque starts every time i start the car and i've never turned it off before turning the car off, this is the first time i've gotten the light. It does appear to be ODB2 adapter related though.

Same here, 2 or 3 times over the past 9 months.

I just got the same code but also my Cruise control light was lit in AMBER, my AC would not blow cold air and as I would come to a stop the tranns would jerk slightly (auto).

I literally cursed as I walked from my driveway all the way up to the house.

I also was using Torque but even with the app off and obd adapter unplugged the CEL still comes on during startup and the second I press Cruise control its light lights up amber and stays lit.

Gonna take it in tomorrow morning to have it looked at. I haven't had the car more than a month!!

Its the OBD2 adapter/torque you have plugged in.
If torque is open/sleeping in a certain state and the connection to the OBD2 adapter is open when you start the car, the ECU will see it as a fault and throw U codes.
Clear the codes with torque first.

Leave Torque off until the car is running problem solved. This is a normal bug.

How do you clear the code, U0073, with the torque app?

In Torque
  • Go to Dashboard (not Realtime info display)
  • Scroll/spin the thingy until you see "Fault Codes" app, open it
  • Tap the "..." at the top left to open the menu (or press your phone's menu button)
  • Select "Clear faults on ECU".

I had this happen to me today in rural Arkansas, out in the middle of nowhere. Engine and slip lights came on, and the engine dropped to half power. I pulled off and checked the codes in Torque: U0073. So I got on the internet and searched for U0073 and found THIS THREAD telling me what was wrong with my car. Cleared the code and was back on the road in about seven minutes. Drove another 400 miles without incident.

Not too many years ago I would have had to call for a rescue. Ain't technology grand?

I received U0073 today and yes I was using Torque at the time. Whatever it did, it actually shut off my engine. Restarted fine but still had the CEL for a bit. The fault cleared itself after a while (after I unplugged my ELM427 BT).

FYI, general consensus seems to be that Torque causes this if it's already running when you start the car. I started making sure to exit Torque every time I turn off the car (hitting the "back" button twice from the realtime monitor screen will give you a prompt to ask if you want to exit). Since I started doing that, the only time I've had the code is the one time I forgot to turn off Torque when I was just running into a parts store for a minute.
