Just an opinion on this.
Since the tachometer on the car communicates using CAN signals, and all the relevant systems in the car send CAN signals, shouldn't it actually be a plug and play and the display would stay on the default out of the box setting without the steering wheel to control it.? the only issue i can think of is the ECU not being able to communicate, here's a quote by steve99 from the other thread
Quote:
I know 100% that the earlier ECU calibration will not run on 2017 cars and causes secutity imobiliser system to lock out and need reset procedure.
so I suspect that the 2017 ecu calibration will not run with older security system.

You can't even swap the old gauge to a different car.... pre facelift model gauge swap involves getting dealer to get a code from subaru to swap for you....... why do you think the new one with all digital stuff will be easier.

Figure most guys that actually know about this just assume it's pretty expensive hence nobody posted about it?

But please do try and let us know the result.

*To be honest i just wanna know if the older car can get the new track mode. lol

I’d like to confirm. I swapped the gauge cluster and steering wheel with clock spring. Still need dash harness to make this work but so far gauges work fine. I just can’t change screens on gauge lcd till I pin the wires in or get the dash harness. They changed clock spring and also the clock spring connector from a 12pin to a 14pin. Parts from a 2017 Limited brz and I own a 2013 Limited brz.

Please let us know when you get it worked out. Many of us would do this swap as well.
