FT86PROJECT9S

Hey everyone welcome to this build thread. If you choose to follow along we will show you new products that we have developed, problems and solutions we have found.

SO let's begin

1st the FA20 Tear down, This build starts with a 2014 8k engine.

It was fairly straight forward lots of time cutting away the RTV and carbon build up. There are pictures all over net of stock FA20's torn down so I will not be posting pictures of that.

SO the first problem we ran into was trying to find a strong starting point with the block. I wanted to sleeve the block but wasn't happy with the sleeves on the market so we needed to reinvent the wheel so to speak. How do we do that we call in some experts. I contacted Outfront Motorsports and the next thing I knew I loaded up the engine and headed to California to Outfront Motorsports. If you aren't familiar with Outfront you should check them out. When I arrived I met Jeremy and John, John took one look at the block and already had the solution to build a new sleeve. John looks to Jeremy and say's let’s do it, 1 phone call later and I am meeting with the CEO of L.A. Sleeve, Dave Metchkoff.
John, Jeremy, Dave and I finalized the details of the sleeves and 10 minutes later the FA20 Block is on its way to L.A. Sleeves corporate office for R&D.

On with the solution....
Here are a few pics of the sleeves that were developed. As you can see there is no way they can leak, drop, or walk around by the way they are designed. Problem solved for block strength.

The biggest issue we have found with a high boost FA20 is rod failure. That was a easy fix. PAUTER RODS

I-beam design super strong I would say easy 30+ PSI of boost.

Pistons

Everyone knows you have to have a good piston to make power without having a huge meltdown.. For me it was JE pistons I've used them for years and they never let me down. Also as you can see they were WPC treated for friction and heat.
And if you decide to go big power get the heavy duty wrist pins so you don't crack a piston at high boost...

Heads

This is where you have to be careful!!!!!! Their is a major valve train change in FA20s from2013.5 and up!!!!!!! Below 2013.5 the FA20 has 2 different size rocker arms and valves. The valves are 100 thousandths longer on the right side than the left. NO ONE MAKES VALVES FOR THEM AT THIS TIME ITS A CUSTOM ORDER TO GET THEM TRUST ME I FOUND OUT THE HARD WAY AND HAD TOO WAIT A MONTH!!!!! They will be available soon thru Super Tech.. Just be careful when setting up your heads double check triple check if you have too...

Any idea why that change was implemented in 2013.5?

Fasteners

Lets talk fasteners for a bit. This is what I found.
Two companies build great studs and bolts for the FA20
1: ARP
2: DYNOSTY

Here is the skinny on both If you want the very best Head Stud kit you can get use Dynosty's L19 Head studs they are stronger than ARP 2000's

If you want the very best or should I say strongest case bolts use ARP 2000's as Dynosty is one step below the tensile strength of ARP2000's

My opinion is this:
Tons of boost you need the L19 holding power. =Dynosty
Case bolts do not have near the force on them as the heads so either is fine to be honest ARP 2000's are overkill in MY OPINION......
If you want ARP to build you a set of L19 head studs get ready to hand them $1500 for a set... Ya I fell over when they quoted me that!!!! Thanks Dynosty love your kit!!!!!!

A few early FA20 engines had problems throwing rocker arms and blowing up might be one of the reasons or the manufacture wanted to save money by having both sides matching eliminating the cost to manufacture 2 different rocker arm and valve sets. I'm not really sure. I'm sure someone on the forum might know better than me.

Crankshaft

Not really much out there yet In the line crankshafts yet so we will use a stock FA20crank With a slight WPC modification.
