De-badging a new 2014 fr-s.

I wanted to know what the chances of the car fading in one year?

If I remove the fr-s badge on the back, will there be a lightening on the Argento?

Paint fades are more common on flat horizontal surfaces and less likely on vertical ones. If you find there is some fade, it should be minimal and decrease over time (as the whole area would fade together). Worst case, put the emblem back on. That said, in one year with modern paint, I doubt there would any noticeable difference in the paint.

There was a tiny bit of fading on my 2014 asphalt around the frs badge on the back but after a few washes the color evened out nicely.

Why would it fade? Is the car painted after badges are applied?

No, that wouldn't be fade.

Webster's defines fade as:
: to lose strength or freshness
: to become weaker
: to disappear gradually
: to become less bright
: to lose color


See, when the sun shines on something for a long time, the colour will start to fade. If it has been sitting in the sun for the past year, that paint under the badge could be brighter/sharper than the area exposed to the sun for the past year.

I mean... it's not rocket science, it's just a bit of common sense.

Exposure to UV fades paint over time. UV protection in modern paint jobs makes it less of a problem than it used to be, but once upon a time you would have a car for ten years, then an emblem would fall off, and the paint underneath it would be darker than the paint that had been exposed to the sun.

A single year of sun on modern paint shouldn't make any difference, though. But then again, considering how shitty the paint is on these cars...

OP asks about paint fade with debadging a new FRS, not a 1 year old FRS.

New paint won't be faded. This is what I assume the thread to be about.

I've seen ghost emblems on FR-S's that were debadged 4 months after purchase...or 6 months after production.

These cars are on boats for a while so that's probably where the initial fading begins. Plus they sit at the port for a while too. By the time you buy your car, it's not the paint that becomes etched with the emblem, it is most likely the clear coat.

That's why if you polish it correctly, you should be able to eliminate the ghost marks.

You shouldn't have any problems with the actual base color after a year.

Once upon a time you could have a car 2 or 3 years and the paint could fade so bad it was a totally different colour. That is if it didn't peal right off (silver and grey were horrible for that), bubble up, or just simply rust away in under 5 years. Back then cars were meant to be kept 4 or 5 years then thrown away and get a new one. When I hear people say "they sure don't make them like they used too" about the cars from the 60s to the 80s I always think "no they don't thank god"!

Dont debadge, I dont know who come up with the idea debadging makes u look cool. Maybe 30 years ago? In reality debadging only makes ur car look ghetto as fuk nowadays. If you really dont like scion badge, help uself and put on a toyota badge.

Nope 30 years ago we were trying to find more badges to tack on! Think it was more of the "Fast and Furious" early 2000s crowd that thought it looked cool. Even heard a Civic fanboy tell his buddies that he could go faster without the wind resistance! I told him that without them he had less risk of burning up during re-entry but he didn't get the joke and just stared at me.

It really depends on the taste of the person. Personally, I like the way my car looks without the FR-S badge on the trunk lid. I don't think think it looks "ghetto as fuk", but that's just my opinion.
