There are reasons why you can buy half finished products for dirt cheap or get a fully finished car that will say "asking $20,000 have receipts for $80,000 in work". When considering a budget it can be far, far less expensive to alter a completed car than start from scratch and build the whole thing.
Yep. Fiancée’s dad has a Z28 that was just finished being restored. He’s about 150k into the thing, and it still isn’t quite where he wants it to be, so I’m expecting another 10-20k.

But, with that said, there’s a lot of teenage nostalgia in it, and he wanted it to be just right with it. He says it’ll run 9’s at the strip.

As for built not bought, I’ve done every single mod on my car myself. If I had the opportunity to do it all again, I wouldn’t touch a thing on my own and would pay a shop to do everything, save for the easy things. Nothing like laying under a rusty exhaust manifold for a half hour, and then heading straight to the bathroom to wash your hands and pick metal out of your eyes.

this is the hiring pool right now.

the boss keeps these kids around simply because he can't find anyone else. despite their lack of motivation/aptitude, it's safer to have someone else on the job with us in case of emergencies.
Christ, I’ve been trying to find an electrical apprentice gig for a while now. Got in touch with the local union and they told me that my current skill set offers zero transferable skills. Might be time to go back to school.

Having to explain the metallurgy behind heat treating and quenching metal to your company president who's background is accounting who thinks watching a youtube video makes him an expert.

I don't think he will be asking me any questions for a while at least

I forget who quenched their swords in prisoners. Offer to demo. Think it was Vikings? And 20w50 at 90°F is just about as good.

I worked at a spring manufacturing plant with 4 (big bloody) heat treat lines for many years. I determined it was black art that required at least one soul sold to Satan to be successful.

Environmental health and safety. I always work the lines and try to learn the process though since it makes my job easier. I mastered every task in the place except the heat treat. Maybe if I had stayed another 10 years or so.

9's at the strip isn't a friendly street car. That is a dedicated drag car. Maybe pulling your leg a bit?

And eye protection is cheap.
