The video of Tada san is very old. They need to adapt these days. The MX-5 has nowadays a much better power to weight ratio and other sports cars like the TT and 718 Boxster are way far in engine performance. Don't be fooled that the BRZ is an entry level sports car and they don't care what competition does. They care and they do often detailed comparisons.

What if they put in the new 1.5-liter turbocharged engine, that's going in the Levorg (Grovel), apparently.

You know how everyone made a huge deal about a minivan having a faster 1/4 mile time then the 86's?
I thought of that and this thread yesterday and laughed when i had to feather the clutch in 1st gear to keep from running over a minivan making a right hand turn like they were carrying an overfilled fish tank. All that was in the van was a mom and a kid in a car seat. I'm still of the opinion that if the car needs more power, maybe you suck at driving.

More importantly, look at all the block changes they made to bump the power to 205hp. It was a major overhaul of the entire design.

….. in making those changes to the engine, I'll bet MPG didn't change at all. The one effort was to see if they could get a bit more HP out of the engine, but not at the expense of even losing 1 mpg.

MX-5 doesn't weight 2400 lbs. Are you checking the automatic or maybe the RF? It is closer in the 2339 lbs area.
Meaning: (2339 +165)/181 = 13.83 lb/hp To achieve the same ratio with BRZ you need at least a 214hp engine and don't forget that the max. torque in Mazda is coming much sooner which is more important. You can see better the difference in 0-60 mph (5.7 vs. 6.2 seconds) or in 5-60 mph numbers. |

Miata "Club" (6-speed manual): 2345 lb. https://www.caranddriver.com/reviews...tested-review/ Toyota 86 (6-speed manual): 2754 lb. (2345 +165)/181 = 13.8 lb/hp (2754 +165)/205 = 14.2 lb/hp Both 95mph in the 1/4, Miata gets there a couple/few tenths quicker (better weight distribution helping "launch"?). For sure the Miata doesn't have *MUCH* better power/weight... Or did you mean it had much better power/weight vs. previous lower-power Miata? |

More confirmation from Toyota on next gen 86

The Miata doesn’t sit on primacies. I’ve yet to see a proper instrumented test of the TS (ts got Michelin PS4s) but I bet that with the same tires the limited PP and the Miata Club would be dead nuts in the 0-60 and quarter. In the quarter the brz will make up for the slight difference in power/weight (5%) with better aero (.27 vs .35 Cd, 30%) Last edited by Yoshoobaroo; 09-02-2019 at 11:36 AM. |

I’d take the same power or a slight bump in power minus the torque dip but it weigh 100kg less, that would be cool. Hopefully they keep the ethos of the car being light weight, RWD and a high revving engine etc. The MX-5/Miata went this route from NC to ND. As long as I can still fit in it of course...

Yea that’s what sucks about the Miata. I really appreciate them making it as light as they can, but it’s too small for anyone over the 80th percentile in height. |
