Vehicle registration expires while traveling...

So, gentlemen, not only my physical copy of my vehicle registration is missing but I just realized it will expire during my travel/PCS.

My reg. is good til 05/17 and from 26MAY to 06JUN I am supposed to be traveling to my jext duty station. My car is registered in Texas and I am currently stationed in IL.

I have looked up the Texas DMV and they say everything can only be accomplished in person, so unless anyone knows otherwise, do I just have to register my car and pay the fees in IL?

Never has it been so perfectly aligned before. Sigh.

First thing I would suggest you do is obtain another copy of your registration.

Where is your PCS taking you ... ??

If it's Illinois, I would suggest you go ahead and register your car in Illinois.

How long do you expect to be at your new duty station ... ??

Do you have the title ... ??

Come back.

Travel is IL > FL > AZ

TX dmv said I need to be present in person to request another copy of registration. Lolwot.

I haven't transferred over to IL because I'm only here for a total of 9 monrhs. I did pan to register in AZ but didn't realize the deadline.

Army Vet here:

If you are mid-PCS there is generally a forgiveness...(I know if its from overseas, there is for sure a leniency)

9 Months would be a little too long IMHO (I want to say there is a limit, but I am unsure the actual length...some people registered their cars to an on base pass while in AIT or training).

If you were to register in IL, check how much that will be. You shouldn't have to pay a sales tax since you already have paid that before (WA makes you pay initial sales tax if you haven't paid it already on initial registration for example).

You may just have to pay $200 or w/e it is. I think it would be worth a phone call or two to see if you can get a hook up from TX (play the military card).

It seems odd to get a COPY of your registration, that they require you to be in person. I think you should call back and try to get a different person to help you.

But long story short...you can't just go almost a year without having tabs on your car...it would be hard to get onto base without getting it registered (impossible probably).

As @Atropine mentioned ........play your military card.

"Out-of-State and Military Car Registration Replacement

In-state military members must follow the same procedures as civilians to replace car registration in person at a local county tax office. However, out-of-state military members and civilians need to contact the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles for information on how to proceed. Because replacing car registration in Texas can only be done in person at a Texas tax office, the DMV will have to determine whether their extenuating circumstances qualify them to replace vehicle registration by other means."

Save yourself a lot of grief ....... I suggest you register that puppy somewhere.....

After I returned from a tour in Germany, my car was purchased and registered in Germany and I had green "USA" plates.

I drove from NJ to CA and around CA for several months, with that registration and those plates.

Finally, I got tired of being stopped by LEO and explaining what the plates were ...... so, I registered the car in California.

How much longer will you be stationed in Illinois .... ??

I will be here in IL until May 26, and the tag expires at the end of May. I won't actually reach my next station until about 8 or 9 June. I had read that previously and when I called I got told "lol sucks for you" and was told to go back to TX to get a new copy. I'll try calling again and hope to get someone else.

So what you are saying is that it should be OK to drive a few days with it expired? I'll always have my orders in hand but I'm not sure how much cops will care.

Being enlisted, I'm just trying to save as much money as I can due to the bare-minimum wage we're paid, but if I have to register it here before leaving and re-register in AZ, I will.

in Cali, you can take a copy of your Orders to DMV and be put on a "suspended" type of list for registration, maybe your state do the same?

Af vet here. Registering in Az is easy and cheap, so you at least have that to look forward to.

Well, in that case, I would chance it and register when you arrived in Arizona.

Do you have anything to show LEO that you own your car ... ??

Past IL DMV copy of paid for plates .. ??

Title .. ??

Copy of receipt of paid auto insurance (or the bill).

Auto insurance card .. ??

Anything to show LEO you didn't steal the car.

You may look into a 30 day temporary permit:

http://www.txdmv.gov/motorists/regis...porary-permits

I can appreciate your limited military pay. When I first went on active duty, my base pay (as a 2nd Lt) was $216 per month plus $110 housing allowance and $47 per month subsistence allowance (an appropriate term).

Oh, hesh up @Tcoat ......yes, they did issue me a horse and saber ......

This.

I used to live in Surprise, right outside Luke AFB and registraion was cheap and easy. CA, on the other hand, is a joke. About to get worse with the additional registration tax they're about to implement

I do have many documents with my name on it that shows the VIN of the car. I guess I'll take the risk, I don't feel like paying $200+ for no reason.

Also, I look forward to Luke AFB. I only hear good things about it.

Well, thanks for your military service.

Hopefully, you won't get bothered by a LEO on your way out.

I suggest you gas up in Texola, OK and don't stop until you get to San Jon, NM.

Pray you don't meet this fellow near Vega, TX ......

I'm really close to Luke. I'm in Goodyear. Just a heads up when you call the Az MVD the first individual will be a female inmate. If you do not want to speak with them just ask to speak to a level 2 person.

How I know this info? I work at the prison and their call center is at my unit.

Hahaha you're serious? Is this some sort of rehabilitation program or something?

That bad, huh?

Also, thanks and sorry for dismissing your support for the Military. I just joined the wrong branch, and I'm a little salty about that.
