Find a range that rents firearms, you might even be able to get in on a class.

I'll be getting my CCWP eventually. I looked at a Sig Mosquito last year but wasn't ready to buy. It's only .22 caliber compared to the 9mm Sig Sauer. But 99% of the time it'll be for target practice. I want something that I can practice with for now. I can always upgrade later.
I enjoy the theory of .22 conversions. Sig sells .22s that can be converted to 9mm, .357, .40, etc. with a simple change of the slide and magazines. If I was starting, that's how I'd do it because you end up with basically two very good guns for less than the cost of one full size centerfire Sig.

Of the centerfire pistol cartridges I've shot, 9mm is by far the most manageable...but that doesnt make it easy to shoot, just easier. .45 hurts my wrist, lol. For any new shooter I would suggest the biggest and heaviest gun that fits your hand in a caliber you find manageable and accurate.

For small of stature and hand women, go try a Sig P239 - or any subcompact "carry" handgun - at your local range. A friend of mine (0 waist, xs, petite, rtc.) shot and enjoyed one very much because it fit her hand, I on the other hand couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with it because my hands are too large to get any grip on it (and I have fairly standard hands).
