After done adjusting, have someone walk VERY slowely around the car. You should always see them. I do this with every new car I get, pisses my wife off, but she almost never changes the mirrors afterward, other than a little down for her height difference.

I've always used a blind spot mirror on all my cars...never had any issues.

Now I'm not saying people shouldn't adjust their mirrors like this. It makes good sense. But some people have depth perception issues and may NEED the flanks in the mirror. And what you see in the mirror should never replace common sense and what you can see with your own eyes.
+1000

The most important thing IMO is to work on your spatial awareness. Improving mirror use is a part of that but a good driver will always know exactly where every car is around him, and despite 'knowing' that will always check.

I always check over my shoulders. Habit I keep from riding a motorcycle. I use the "wrong" way because I like to see the edges of my car to keep my perspective, just a personal preferrence I guess. Also, I move my mirror pretty high to get as much of the rear background to watch for speeders/motorcycles/cops/emergency vehicles coming up fast behind me. I usually move my mirror down also when parallel parking or backing up in tight spaces because I'm paranoid of curbing my wheels. I've only done it once and it was because I turned my wheel after I parked *doh*

Federal regulations won't allow technology to solve that problem (hint. A solution already exists, but can't be implemented)

Have a friend in the Phillipines who says they are taught not to shoulder-check there since they risk a collision with the car in front since traffic is so crazy there. Everything is done just with side mirrors.

I am going to try this later today. I have to admit that's the thing that bothers me the most about the car. I feel a little uncomfortable changing lanes, especially moving right to left. Hopefully this will make a difference.

That's the only way I have any of my trucks set up. If you've driven a long vehicle, or towed a trailer, you can't set up the mirrors to be looking at your own ass.

Whoa, I'd switch out to that in a heartbeat.

I've been running my mirrors like that for years, and I still shoulder check when changing lanes (mainly for motorcycles). I feel much more aware of my surroundings that way. Another thing you should do is make sure your driving position is correct. Having a gangsta lean or sitting in the back seat does not give you proper control over a vehicle, nor do you have the proper line of sight.

I really hope that a company comes up with convex mirrors for this car like they had for the S2k. They take some getting used to, but are great IMO.

Even with a shoulder check and racing honed situational awareness there is still a blind spot. And I once had a bumper scratch incident when I had shoulder checked on a freeway entrance ramp on the merge exactly when the car in front of me suddenly stopped for now reason. That new mirror looks interesting.

I've been running my mirrors this way for years and it's great. In tight situations like accident avoidance it means less risk if a shoulder-check is impractical.

While you can get away without shoulder-checking on two-lane roads for the most part, the one place to watch is on three-lane plus roads. This setup is really only for the lane on either side of the car. If you change into the middle lane at the same time as someone else in the outside lane does (especially someone coming up fast in the third lane like from a merge who decides to take two lanes), you won't see them until it's too late without a shoulder-check.
