Yup, had been running perfectly. Just oil + filters. Then about 3 week ago cruising along at <3000 rpm: audible misfire, really rough idle then stalled. It cranked but did not start.

I got it towed home (it was already dark) then next morning found small oil poodle on the skid plate with what appeared to be some kind of roller bearing pins (probably from rocker arms). I then got it towed to the dealer as if it's recall related I might be getting a free new engine. If not then I'll rebuild it myself.

Sounds suspiciously like... It shouldn't take them three weeks to see if a valve spring broke.

Very interesting. How many miles on it?

Well to be fair to them, 1 of those weeks was holidays here so they didn't work on those days. Then there's been a lot of back and forth because the car was originally not imported by them.

But they've finally agreed to check and take care of it IF it is indeed valve spring related.

Car has 42k miles

That sounds bad, but at least it wasn't a large greased schnauzer on your tie rod....

It took a while but finally have a diagnosis. No spring failure, apparently rocker(s) ejected itself into the valve cover.

Should I be worried about this happening again after engine is fixed?

The procedure to replace that rocker involves all the same scraping and sealing that is done for this spring recall. If anything, that's what I'd sweat. :/

Just received a recall letter... Quote "It has been found that the engine cylinder head valve springs may fracture, at worst case possibly causing the engine to stall.".

OK, so - take it into a dealer and your local Bubba will "fix" it so it won't just "stall" anymore -

Humfrz, you'll be pleased to hear that my car is booked in for open heart surgery.. The service manager informed me that about 1000 spring kits have been allocated for the UK, covering BRZ/GT86, Forester, Impreza, Legacy/Outback and XV cars.

Has anyone taken the opportunity to switch the camshafts for something more interesting such as the HKS/Piper cams?
