I'd recommend buying something in the $300 range when you start, and later on, when you want to upgrade, get somethign in the $1000 range.
The cheaper helmets will protect you just as well; they all have to pass the same tests, but the more expensive ones are significantly lighter, and will put a LOT less strain on your neck. I'm still using my first helmet, and I went with a middleground of about $600. A removeable liner is really nice, as you can wash it. I don't have one and wish I did. |

I have the Bell Sport, previously I owned the Bell Sport III.
Ultimately the biggest thing is fitment. No two heads are alike, and you want something that is snug and won't move, but also not too tight. Each person will have preferences on eyeport opening, visor tint (if any), etc. Much like a good suit, you just have to try it on to get a feel for it. -alex |

I'll register this weekend. Excited to go out there for the first time. Will rent a helmet for this time. Sung emailed me back saying it's like 20 bucks to rent for a day.
Question: How long does the entire session last for? The link says the arrival time is at 7AM but doesn't list out any other scheduled times. And bringing my wife to the track is a bad idea, right? Thanks guys. EDIT: Nevermind. Just registered it. |

Track goes hot at 9pm, and cold at 5pm. Sessions are generally 20 minutes, and you'll get 5 of them |

Thanks for the info.
Man, I thought people will be all over track events like this. Guess no SoCal 86 owners don't track their cars? |

registration fills up closer to event date.
i really wanted to go to this one but will be in mammoth. lift tickets are more expensive than the full track day ლ(ಠ_ಠლ) i'd go test out some helmets at Cycle Gear or whatever is available to you, then order a sub-$100 helmet. Same amount of protection, heavier and less ventilation. If you start tracking seriously, you can sell the helmet on craigslist (or keep spare for your wife?) and then go buy yourself a nice helmet. If you rent a helmet, bring your own head sock. My bro in law didn't and luckily I had a spare shirt he could use. |

Your first session will consist of all beginners + instructors in your group. The beginners will be broken into groups of approximately 5 cars, led by an instructor car. The instructor car is there to set a safe pace for you to follow him/her at, and to familiarize you with the track layout, so that you don't get lost. Additionally, you will be doing a passing exercise on the front straight (practice how to signal cars behind you to pass, how to pass, and actually pass). Run groups are sorted by experience and pace. You will have other cars on track with you, but remember, we all drove our cars to the track, and we all want to drive them home. It's not a race, and there are no prizes for passing people on track. Let the aggressive/questionable drivers by, and complain about them to the start/finish flagger and/or an instructor, and let the staff handle the situation. Safety and awareness are key |
