Why the FRS / BRZ over other cars

Because for some of us, the list of items we don't want is as important as the want list.

There, now just direct all the trolls here and we can cut most threads in half .

Easy.

1. It's RWD; I just do not enjoy driving FWD cars. They aren't fun to me. And I already have two very good AWD cars. So all FWD options are cut from the list. No Civic, no Mini, no GTI, etc..

2. It's sub 3000lbs. Hell, it's sub 2800lbs. Cars are getting heavy and people are getting used to it. I think people have forgotten how a light car feels. So 3000+ cars are out. Goodbye Genesis Pig.. err Coupe, etc...

3. It also has +2 seats in the back. [MostInterestingMan]I don't often have passengers, but when I do, I'd like to have a seat for them.[/MostInterestingMan] So that removes the Miata, S2000, and FD RX-7 from the list.

Then there's the better weight distribution and engineered low CG and low polar moment of inertia. There really isn't a direct competitor.

I can't think of any other car I want. I have a mazda3, and I know I want this as my next car. There's not another car that I would think to fall back on. The Genesis doesn't do a thing for me. If for whatever reason the FR-S falls through, I can't get it, etc, then I'll just stick with my 3 longer.

Very good way of putting it. Am I the only one who will be pissed if I can't order my FR-S without things like Pioneer Bespoke, a subwoofer, fog lights, heated seats, and navigation?

FR-S because it's the closest thing to a Porsche Cayman R for 1/3 the price... a pure drivers machine built for instantaneous response and a fine tuned driving manner. There is no other car similar to the FR-S except for maybe an MX-5 but do not want a convertible at all and it is a tighter fit with a helmet and would require installation of a rollbar for track days. I love the look of it as well. The only thing I wish the FR-S had more of is weight reduction (weight is always the enemy of performance, the less weight the better) but from the recent Auto-X report I can't wait to get one - it basically is what I've been waiting all these years for; a lightweight (ish) coupe designed from the get-go for a performance driver/racer at a reasonable price.

Because of 2+2 ... I rarely have people sit in my back seats ...
but sometimes you need to carry a friend or two.

Luckily I don't have any friends, the miata is looking quite tempting considering I can get it for quite a bit cheaper and have more money to make it into what I want.

When you look at all of those "best handling cars" articles there's really not many cars you can compare it to that are "light" RWD 2+2 coupes for under $30k so it really does fill a gap. The closest you get is really either the RX-8 or the Miata/S2k/350z but the latter don't satisfy the 2+2. RX-8 isn't being made anymore so that's out. You could bring in the Genesis Coupe but if you're gonna go that heavy it kind of ruins what the goal was.

I had a 3 too....loved that car! Nothing really handles like it in the subcompact ecobox...ie corolla, civic (non si of course, etc). Mine rusted REALLY bad though due to canada.

I ended up buying a 3.5 SE Altima and all I can say is I miss the 3. The altima has gobbles of power, but the handling isnt there at all (big family sedan).

So my opinion is you would be dissapointed with the gencoupe...if you read reports, the speed 3 handles better and it's fwd, so IMHO wouldnt be a huge uprgrade for you in terms of "driver experience"....esp when you are spending 25k +.
