a change in the differential ratio and a 5hp bump for the 2.0-lite flat four engine that now produces 205hp and 156 lb-ft of torque. The automatic model keeps the same 200hp engine as the 2016 FR-S.

By the way, so funny, Toyota makes it sound like they did something revolutionary by calling it an 86. Most guys from 2013 with the FRS were already calling the car an 86. >_<

LOLOLOLOLOLOL So they take the poorly worded press release and change the whole meaning of the info! I would have thought that as "journalists" they would catch that the HP increase and tranny changes should have been two different sentence. Guess not though.

If I remember correctly, thats what was stated in the Toyota press conference at NYIAS too. It was something along the lines of 'for you manual transmission enthusiasts, a 5hp bump as well as a change in differential gear ratio'

Yep whatever they did is only for manuals.

I strongly suspect it was just poor sentence structure. The probability of having two different engines is so low it is just silly to consider.

Press release:
"On the manual version of the car, additional performance comes from a gear ratio change and a torque increase to 156 lb.-ft, as well as a five-horsepower increase to 205 hp."

Fixed (pre my theory)
On the manual version of the car, additional performance comes from a gear ratio change. The engine on all versions has a torque increase to 156 lb.-ft, as well as a five-horsepower increase to 205 hp.

This is my theory and I am sticking with it until more detailed info proves I am talking out of my ass (god I hope I am not talking out of my ass) {wouldn't be the first nor last time I talked out of my ass though} [really there are people that will tell you I always talk out of my ass but my correct to incorrect ratio is still very good]

Oh, it doesn't make sense to me either. The press release was poorly worded and I was hoping they would be a little more clear and go in depth about it in NY, but obviously not.

Not much we can do but speculate until they release the details.

Sure sounds like it is only the manual. I was originally with you on the poor wording.

I wonder if they tuned the car differently because of the manual gear ratio change and that also bumped the hp up 5.

Yup, thats what I was referencing. It seems clear, but still doesn't make sense to me why they would do anything different just based on the transmission. If this is the case though, it points to just being a difference in tune most likely. The other problem I see with this is that even if it was just a tune, it would've been nice to eliminate the torque dip and that should be applicable to all cars not just MT.

Might have still be done and just not mentioned. Although I'm not sure they could really eliminated it as it requires e85 or a header currently to do that.
