They would simply say, "I like automatics because I don't know how to drive a manual and want to be able to has cheezeburger and text on my phone instead of paying attention to when to shift. That's my choice, so screw you."

My BRZ is at the dealership to fix an oil leak before the warranty runs out (97K miles--just in time!), so I'm driving a loaner Impreza with those silly paddle shifters. I've been playing with them. They are absolutely no substitute for a real manual transmission. People who say they are instantly mark themselves as having no idea whatsoever what they're talking about. I'm sure having paddle shifters is more fun than not having them, but characterizing them as being as engaging as a manual is like insisting you don't bother having sex with other people because masturbation is just as good.
I can identify with that. My FR-S is a MT, my previous car (Miata) was a MT. mrs humfrz sedan is a V-6 AT (6 speed) with paddle shifters.

I have tried several times to drive her car in the "M" mode, using the paddle shifters. It just doesn't seem "right" -

In all honesty, maybe, it doesn't seem "right" because, I can't seem to get the hang of it. The AT mode in her car seems to me at being quicker and smarter in shifting, than my fingers are -

If you're talking about fanatics in the car culture in general, Ford vs. Chevy.

If you're talking about fanatics specifically with regard to manual transmissions, that's because of their decline in production, the increase in percentage of drivers who don't know how to drive one and the insistence of those drivers that it's okay for a sports car to only come with an automatic since paddle shifters are "just as good." Overzealous support of manual transmissions didn't happen in a vacuum. It happened because the manual transmission is under very real threat.

Oh, my, the AT MT debate rages on.

Brings to mind a story from back-in-the-day when the Fords and Chevys were battling it out between the floor shift MT and the 3-on-a-tree MT.

I had a 1948 Chev, 3-on-the tree (vacuum assisted shift - read slow), Steve had a 1937 Chev 3 speed floor shift. Then Claud showed up with the ultimate compromise in shifting, in the form of a 1936 Hudson Terraplane.

Yep, you could floorboard shift it OR you could use the electric "paddle" shifter.

Maybe, just maybe, we should reach back a few years and re-introduce this concept?

The best transmission is the one YOU like.

I like manual in 86 because clutch kick, launch and stuff.

Not so much like it in heavy traffic.

I like auto in 4WD, tow cars and drag cars.

I don't like autos in small, low power RWD sports cars that I like to drive like I stole it, oversteer where I can, launch like a idiot and do mad skids in the wet.

Opinions may vary, why, because we are not sheep, some are over opinionated arseholes who care not for others and think their way is the only way, on a regular basis.

I find that 50% of people are idiots who should suck start a shot gun.

So, how about that game last night.....

Could it be because about 10 years ago we saw the beginning of the phasing out of MT's? I remember realizing around 2009 that manuals might actually disappear pretty much altogether.

I meant the fanatics that feel anybody that doesn't drive an MT is a blithering idiot that can't "drive" and are happy to tell everybody that. My objection is in no way related to people supporting the MT it is the total fabrication of myths that they use to support it.

The only thing that this new supra will kill is the guys market, more women’ll will drive the new powered down Supra, reminds me of the Celica, way more women drivers. Toyota is a middle age and women car company for the mass. Don’t expect to much.

Nah, don't fret it. It's like that story/argument that you and your college/drinking/army buddies always tell when you get together. You know it's coming, there won't be anything new, and everybody leaves friends in the end.

Well there's your problem. Buy a car because you like the car, not to buy friends.

Take it from somebody who has owned 4 of these cars now, (2 AT, 2 MT) The AT version of this car is not bad. Slower off the line yes (albeit in an already slow car) but I still found it to be super fun. Roughly 300ms response shift times on the paddles, in my opinion the best torque converter with paddle shifts on the market. Super responsive, super fun to rev this engine out with, and gave the driver a shit ton of control + in auto shift mode with sports mode on the car shifts near perfectly.

If they would have gave this car the ability to launch in AT it would have been a no-brainer. However my 0-60 times in AT were 8+ seconds while in MT you can actually attain a 6.2 time. In an already slow car, you want to squeeze as much power out of it as possible. The MT version of the car doesn't feel THAT much more powerful though - just off the line.

But anyway, I found the AT to be almost as involving as the MT if you decided to use the paddles to manually shift. Just my opinion though (I own a MT 86 now)

Why, did you buy an AT? Also, this forum is free; not all forums are. I paid $50 to be on the S2000 forum back in the day.
