That's my choice, so screw you."

My BRZ is at the dealership to fix an oil leak before the warranty runs out (97K miles--just in time!), so I'm driving a loaner Impreza with those silly paddle shifters. I've been playing with them. They are absolutely no substitute for a real manual transmission. People who say they are instantly mark themselves as having no idea whatsoever what they're talking about. I'm sure having paddle shifters is more fun than not having them, but characterizing them as being as engaging as a manual is like insisting you don't bother having sex with other people because masturbation is just as good.
And vice versa. I like MT because I like it end of story. It doesn't make people a better driver, everybody that drives AT is not a cheese burger chomping moron and MT drivers do all the same shit that AT ones do. They are simply two different ways to change gears and neither one makes the overall skill of driving better or worse.

I have eaten several. In fact I eat, drink and smoke in mine on a regular basis. It is a car not a temple to the Gods of the Standard Transmission.

I'll rephrase; I have never had a Cheese burger... It's a Vegi Burrito or nothing for me! ( Ok... And some popcorn)

And before you say it, my periodic rants about manuals being better in heavy traffic are not excuses. They are true, at least for me. Driving this Impreza in stop and go traffic yesterday was awful. I've decided to swap a manual into the Eagle so it will be easier to drive in local traffic.

Ok so the people that like At are giving excuses but those that prefer Mt have reasons. Got it.

Exactly!

Irrational? Trying to have a rational discussion with the Priests of the Temple of Standard is like having a conversation with any other zealot. It is funny that in the 40 years I have been involved in car culture the fanatics only seem to come about in the last 10 or so. A good car was a good car no mater how the gears were changed.

Resident GD#1 was apologizing to ma-ma and pa-pa for the behavior of her siblings.

OK, so I returned to reading the forum - or did I - hard to tell.

About 10:30 PM, I shut off the computer, ma-ma closed her I-pad and we loaded them up to take them home.

All was then quiet -

Yet none of your MT justification for "engagement" is any more meaningful, it's just your opinion.

Yes, I have an AT, but I could have purchased the MT. I have about as many miles driving in MT vehicles as I do in AT vehicles, and chances are the mileage adds up to as much or more than you have driven. I would not drive just "any" AT, but I do happen to like the one in the FRS.

Like you said earlier I've driven an MT enough that it is "automatic" to me when driving one, either around town or around an oval. It is a different driving experience than paddle shifters, but I really can't say it's better, just different. Neither lets me be a better driver, although one or the other could impact my speed (and depending on the situation, one or the other would be better).

Besides, I could "has cheezeburger and text on my phone" as well as adjust the radio, roll down the window and flirt with MomHawk all just as easily in an MT.

So there....

Soon you will all be longing for the good old days of driving ANY transmission in human-driven cars as it was more engaging than sitting facing backwards in your vehicle, sipping tea, and reading a book about how 110 is the new 50.

Driving a manual isn't elitist. You've put words in my mouth numerous times on this site and I don't appreciate it.

@Tcoat - now THAT brings to mind a time, back in Missouri, during a Baptist church bible study program.

I was leading the study (believe it or not) and there was this good ol boy from the southern US, that talked real slow - yep, even slower than me.

So, I would try to speed him up by "putting words in his mouth".

He got irritated at me and blurted out one morning "humfrz, we from the South may talk slow, but that don't mean we think slow".

My lesson learned -
